During NYC’s first Halloween weekend celebrations, Pier of Fear was easily the most anticipated event series in the city. Unfortunately, due to recent events two of the five days were cut leaving many fans rather disappointed. Laidback Luke’s Super You and Me was set to occur on Friday, Oct 25th, but was cancelled due to the City’s mandate. In order to make his fans happy, Laidback Luke pulled through and made arrangements to have the event take place at Pacha instead. Ticket buyers were offered full refunds or 20% refunds if they chose to attend the event at the new location- talk about showing love to your supporters! Despite the location change, the event still ran the same and was a major success.
Upon entry, it was packed like a sardine can, which is not unusual for Pacha. Nearly everyone was clad in costumes, mostly in line with the “Super You and Me” theme- Supermans, Spidermans, Batmans and tons of other superheroes got down on the dancefloor to the opening beats of Moska. Pacha was vividly decorated with spiderwebs, pumpkins and ghouls- Halloween weekend was setup to be a banger!
Deniz Koyu opened directly before Luke and got the crowd ready with some electro house. It was a pleasant surprise to hear him open up with Disclosure’s “Latch,” since it is smooth, melodic and more calming in tone. Of course, he ramped it up soon after. Deniz really showed his expertise with mashups by including some interesting pieces in his set; most notably Digitalism’s “Zdarlight” + Tommy Trash/Sebastian Ingrosso’s lyrical version of “Reload.” It was quite refreshing and awesome to hear a more independent sound combined with a summer hit! He also played a mashup of crowd favorites “Who Is Ready to Jump” by Chuckie and “LRAD” by Knife Party. The most unexpected song of his performance was without a doubt Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”- everyone went nuts and was clearly excited to hear such a legendary song that is so fitting for the holiday! Deniz Koyu did an excellent job of getting the crowd ready for what was to come next with an interesting selection of mashups and club-thumping electro house.
Once the man with the plan that saved Pier of Fear; Laidback Luke himself, appeared on the towering stage above the ecstatic clubgoers, a loud cheer could be heard throughout the main floor. Luke is known for taking full command of any crowd’s energy with his choice of big room and electro house. He did not cease to do the same thing on this night. He even switched it up a bit by starting off with Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop” which was the message that rang true for the night- no one was stopping this party despite the cancellation of Pier of Fear! Of course he played a remix of “Turbulence,” taking everyone back to last Summer and even slipped in a pleasant surprise: “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N Roses suddenly blared from the speakers and everyone could be seen rocking out. This track eventually smoothly transition to a song sharing the same title, but the version produced by Alvaro and Mercer ft. Lil Jon- it was perfect and well-placed in his set.
Laidback Luke definitely made all of his fans more than happy by working with Pacha to coordinate and execute a make up event. It was made with nothing short of excitement, enthusiasm and pure Halloween spirit. It showed how much he cared for his fans and he even gave out foam L fingers- his well-known hand sign! Luke saved his Pier of Fear event and put on one of the best shows this season; he is truly dedicated to his music and his supporters and we all appreciate it greatly.
