The end of last year brought some sad news to the hardstyle community- Bas Oskam and Arjan Terpstra, the duo that comprised Noisecontrollers decided to go their separate ways. Citing creative differences, it was very difficult for fans to hear. Despite this, Bas has decided to continue work under the same moniker and bring joy to his beloved followers. 2014 will be the year of Noisecontrollers- with a new album being released today and a successful tour promoting the album just concluding, the future has a lot in store for him. Undrgrnd Sound had the awesome opportunity to chat with him during one of his first tour stops in NYC for LEGACY. Check out what went down.
Voices from the Undgrnd:
Undrgrnd Sound: What would you say characterizes your sound?
Noisecontrollers: That’s kind of a difficult question because I’ve worked so long on developing my own sound. I started off with Arjan as a duo, now I am alone and I am still improving. As for what characterizes it, I think it is a really deep sound and really hard. We had a lot of mainstream sound, we also did other genres but, in general mostly hardstyle.
Now that you are a solo artist, can fans expects a little bit of change from your previous material?
Production-wise, no because I was responsible for most of the Noisecontrollers production anyway. On the other hand, I’m always improving my sound- always working to try and make it different and better. So yes, you can expect some change but not because of the split up. There will always be evolution in Noisecontrollers’ sound.
Is this your first time playing in NYC?
It is actually! I have to say, I’m really surprised- it was such a big crowd, good vibes and great atmosphere. It was my first time but it was fun!
So I guess we surpassed your expectations?
Definitely! I loved the crowd- everyone was so sweet and nice; they were asking for photos and autographs. They were going crazy on the dancefloor and that’s what it’s all about- I really loved it!
We saw you last year at The Sound of Q-dance in LA…
Yea! So now that hardstyle is slowly coming to America, do you think we’re ready for it? How does the crowd here compare to back at home?
Well, it’s totally different. The crowd here is obviously ready for it because otherwise they wouldn’t have come to the show and that’s what I love so much about playing in North America- the people are really dedicated and they go crazy. The Dutch crowd is different; they have such a long history with the genre. I don’t want to say they are spoiled but, they are more used to it. They’re the lucky ones of course but, I am lucky as well since I get to play in North America where people will hear me for the first time. It’s so good to see new crowds!
What are your goals for 2014?
I just produced a new album so, music-wise you would expect me to calm down a little bit and take it easy. But to be honest I’m more motivated to make new music. The story continues…I will keep making more music and who knows? Maybe a new album will come by the end of this year.
Please describe your new album All Around in 5 words or less- GO!
Deep, melodic, (really) hard, emotional, personal
What is an interesting or weird fact that you want your fans to know about you?
Some people already know but, I love to play chess. It really contrasts with my life as a DJ- I travel so much and go to a lot of crazy parties but, when I’m home I like to relax and play some chess. It may be funny and weird but that’s what I like.
