In anticipation of the New Year, RPM presents put together an epic series of events dubbed Big Week NYC. The series features a number of headlining artists from nearly all genres across the spectrum all leading up to New Year’s Eve. On Monday, December 29th trance addicts were set to have their day with an epic roster featuring the God of Trance himself- Armin van Buuren. Supporting acts included Andrew Rayel, Jochen Miller and Mark Sixma. Needless to say, nothing but the best in progressive trance, vocal trance and everything in between would be showcased at Pier 94.
Preceding the main act was Jochen Miller who did an excellent job of getting the crowed amped and ready for what Armin was to deliver. Promptly at the stroke of midnight an epic intro let everyone know that AVB was finally taking the stage. Of course, this moment was marked by Armin’s signature pose- him standing with his arms outstretched as if welcoming his fans to their wildest dreams come true. From the start, Armin played banger after banger- there was no chance that people would fall asleep while he was on the decks!
He opened with a lot of instrumental trance tracks and switched it up with some progressive tracks with heavy basslines. To further add to the musical experience, visuals were projected around the stage that was also accompanied by an insane laser show. Some of the visuals even had holiday themes such as snowflakes and blue-white hues. It was beautiful and definitely made Armin’s set and overall production even better. What’s truly captivating about him as an artist and performer is how he chooses to interact with the crowd by dancing, speaking words to promote positive vibes and just making sure everyone is as amped as he is. There was no moment when people were not dancing – it was nearly impossible not to!
Once the intro to “Adagio for Strings” began a unanimous cheer could be heard around the entire venue. Some other highlights included AVB’s “Not Giving Up on Love” and Gareth Emery’s “U” which was met with everyone singing in a wonderful chorus that promoted the sense of unity that is popular with the trance family. He even included some older, classic tunes such as Cosmic Gate’s “Exploration of Space” which eventually led into a harder section of his set. Big room house and electro were all thrown into the mix which made for a very diverse set that still managed to retain Armin’s signature sounds and vibes.
To bring the night to close, “Ping Pong” and finally Armin’s Grammy-nominated single “This Is What It Feels Like.” could be heard blaring from the speakers. At this point everyone nearly emptied their tanks to these top hits by the man himself! Armin definitely put on an excellent show that was nearly perfect to bring in the New Year. Staying true to his roots while adding some surprises here and there, he once again proved why he will forever be regarded as one of the top names in the trance genre.
