Around a time when deep house music was imploding in on itself amidst a deluge of uninspiring loops, mindless repetition and utter disposability, Berlin’s Santé emerged as part of a wave of new producers with a different cut to their electronic jib. His productions ooze character, charisma, soul, colour, humour and above all a sense of humanity and feeling so devoid from the less inspiring corners of house music.

A look at his upcoming release schedule spells out what a diverse producer he is and how far his popularity ranges – from bastions of techno like Cocoon to the kings of big room house Defected, through to underground darlings like Desolat, Supernature and 8Bit. Few producers can claim such a breadth of imprints to be associated with at any one time. When you ask Santé to describe his musical style, he sayshe doesn’t really know how to – which goes someway to explaining his widespread appeal.

Let’s talk a little about the main event, shall we?

Santé (Avotré/Desolat/Cocoon) comes to us from Berlin, Germany. He may be relatively unknown to the crowd that doesn’t follow house music intricately, but that doesn’t mean squat. He is a musical magician. Apart from his production value, his DJ skills are on point, well-timed effects & not a single transition error was heard all night.

I remember when he played “House Lesson” by Sidney Charles, all I could think to myself, this should be broadcasted to everybody right now because it’s unfair that I get to be a part of this and most people don’t. Completely forgot to mention that the guy is cool as hell too, and was on Resident Advisor’s Top 10 in April 2013.

His label, Avotre, already has some amazing and popular releases by artists such as Re.You, and Sidney Charles. Follow-up releases are already expected to be good. I’m adding this artist to my personal watch list.A lot of people are looking forward to seeing a hell of a lot more come from the man, including myself as a fellow artists and a new huge fan.

A Night at Output with Dan Ghenacia, Hector and Crazy Larry!

You might have heard the name, or maybe you heard about their unique “No Photo” policy but regardless Output is one of the biggest conversations in the New York Underground at the moment. One of the newest night clubs in Brooklyn, Output possesses the uttermost underground feel a club could ever give off. No photos, no bottle service, no VIP area… Output is the real deal. It is an escape from reality, strictly for the love of music and dancing. And how could one go wrong with that remarkable stentorian F1 sound system? The bass will simply thrive off the speakers and fill your auras with the sexiest clarity of uproaring melodies.

Although I had become a regular Output visitant over the past few months, I was still very excited to attend last Friday’s event with Dan Ghenacia, Hector, and Crazy Larry. This was a very special night indeed as it was Hector’s first Brooklyn debut. Crazy Larry started the evening with a very deep set, perfect for warming up the dance floor. Hector was on next, taking the decks at about 1 am. Hector known for being part of Berlin based record label: Desolat, has rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting young producers and DJs at the moment, effortlessly balancing his will to experiment with commitment to the founding spirt of house. Hector kept a consistent sound to the tracks he played; every track went perfectly into the other and he took absolute FULL advantage of the Function One Sound System. It’s easy to say that bass was Hector’s friend during his debut at Output.

Dan Ghenacia on the other hand, completely switched the vibe of the party. He played funkier melodies, which allowed more people to get up and dance. Ghenacia was not as consistent with his set, but he was very experimental switching from one genre to the next between tracks. He took Output’s inhabitants through a journey when he dropped Julian Perez’ “Canal Cruise” as his second to closing track. You could have walked through Output’s doors at 5 am and clearly seen an awoken dancefloor, with not a single person sitting! For a taste of Ghenacia.. click play below!

Before I knew it, it was 6 am and Ghenacia’s set came to an end. I left Output with a big smile on my face, beats still running through my ear drums, happy to have experienced a night of filled with bass kicking German and French house, eagerly awaiting my next escape from reality in the best of Brooklyn’s Underground.

This weekend one of the busiest weekends in New York City, Electric Daisy Carnival will be hosted. But sadly, the party at EDC NYC ends at 11pm, so what are you to do after the party is done? Keep on partying! Girls & Boys events at Webster Hall know that the fans want more, that’s why this Friday they will have up & coming producer Brillz, Sigma, and Monsta hitting the stage!

Brillz

With the hype of Trap music, new producers have been stepping into the scene left and right, almost rising to fame instantly. One artist that has risen to fame within the up-rise of the genre is the producer Brillz. If you’ve been to a show in the past year or so and the DJ played a trap set, it’s almost a 90% chance that the DJ had dropped a Brillz track or remix. His most recent trap remix for Zedd’s #1 hit song “Clarity” earned him a spot in almost every DJ’s set around the world, whether it be a trap DJ or an electro house DJ, his remix for Clarity has been dropped everywhere receiving support from DJ’s like Zedd, Kill The Noise, Bro Safari, & DJ Craze, just to name a few. Big named DJ’s and small named DJ’s all around know the vibe that Brillz captures in his production are unmatchable. That’s why his remixes have been released on major labels like Interscope. While hitting the a major national scale with a record label like Interscope, Brillz manages to still keep it underground remixing tracks and collaborating with artists like ETC!ETC!. His most recent EP “TWONK” was released on DJ Craze & Kill the Noise’s record label “Slow Roast Records” and has been conquering the blogosphere ever since it released last month.

Monsta

Along with Brillz will be OWSLA records own Monsta hitting the stage this Friday as well. MONSTA have been described as having the melodic synth thrum of Flux Pavilion, the tech-soul vocal drops of Moby and the reverberant snares of trip-hop act U.N.K.L.E. -but their sound is instrument-based and largely sample-free and it was Skrillex who found them. The trio (producers Rocky and Rufio and vocalist Skaar) will release their first EP on the electronic dance music (EDM) star’s indie imprint OWSLA this summer. Signed to the same management stable as Chase & Status, Knife Party and Sub Focus and remixing for artists such as Zedd, Labrinth and Skylar Grey; MONSTA have been played by Zane Lowe on Radio 1 as his ‘Next Hype’ and featured by the likes of NME, 1883, Disorder and included in Billboard magazine’s albums for Summer 2012, ‘40 Hottest Releases’. MONSTA are becoming a regular feature on the club and festival circuit, having already wowed crowds at Camden Crawl, Wireless and Isle of Wight Festival and have been personally invited by Xfm’s Eddy Temple Morris to play a coveted slot at this year’s sold out Secret Garden Party.

Sigma

All the way from their hometown in London will be Sigma hitting the Webster Hall stage with Brillz & Monsta. Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie aka Sigma, need no introduction. From early releases on labels such as Hospital & Viper recordings and the seminal All Blue on DJ Zinc’s Bingo imprint (Drum and bass arenas’ most downloaded track of all time!) they have cemented themselves as an integral part of the scene. More recently anthems such as Night and Day, The Jungle, Stronger & collaborating with Dj fresh on the 2011 single Lassitude have taken Sigma to the top of the drum and bass roster. 2012 has been one of the busiest years to date for Sigma with the guys extensively touring the UK, Europe Australasia & the USA and are about to embark on the support for dj freshs’ first live UK tour. Together with this, the guys are currently working on their much anticipated first album something that will excite the underground and mainstream alike. With regular UKF and BBC Radio 1 support, the future is looking bright.

Girls and Boys at Webster Hall is known for the wild parties that consistently bring the biggest names in EDM to their stage. MiM0SA’s FUTURE TRiLL Summer tour stopped at the Grand Ballroom and brought some chillax vibes to the space. Hailing from Oakland but currently residing in Los Angeles, MiM0SA began producing his smooth, liquidy dubstep at the young age of 17. During a few years of quickly rising fame he graced the stage with headlining artists including Rusko, The Glitch Mob, Datsik, Pretty Lights and Bassnectar. He also performed at a number of large festivals such as Burning Man, Coachella and the final Starscape in 2012. His major achievements occurred in 2011 when he headlined Lightning in Bottle as well as his own tour and sold out major venues across the states. After garnering so many successes, MiM0SA formed his own label called False Idol Musik and released his EPs 58 Degrees and Sanctuary in 2011.

From the moment I arrived everyone was amped, dancing, sweating and filling the room with good vibes. The bass was heavy but was smooth like butter. At the beginning of his set, MiM0SA played a lot of trap and remixes of classic hip hop songs such as Ludacris’s “Stand Up.” He managed to stick to his dubstep roots by keeping the deeper bass undertones in his mixes. I was not expecting to hear so much trap, but in retrospect it’s not that surprising. After he dropped an awesome hard bass remix of Major Lazer’s “Pon de Floor” he soon transitioned into a liquid dubstep section, which was reminiscent of tracks featured on the Sanctuary EP. One of my favorite moments was when he played a soulful song that suddenly disintegrated into grimy dubstep- it was really unexpected and noticeably enjoyed by the crowd. The intensity ramped up and helped segue into another trap and hip hop segment. Because Webster was not as packed as usual, it was more intimate and allowed him to interact with the audience with more ease. He hyped everyone up by announcing when he was dropping a few new tracks and eventually stepped from behind the tables to blow some smoke into the front row’s eager faces!

Later on in the set, heavier forms of liquid dubstep that were clearly rooted in trap blared from the speakers. His alternations between liquid dub and trap/hip hop were seamlessly woven together and made for a diverse performance. The main highlight was when he finally dropped his classic track; “Psychedelic Stereo” which was accompanied by the trippiest visuals on the screen above the stage- butterflies constantly changed figurations and undulated while the crowd swayed along to the relaxing beat. To end the night, a remix of “I’m Different” by 2 Chainz quickly incited a sing-a-long and unified clapping while MiM0SA danced on stage. The most surprising song was played afterward; “Birthday Song” also by 2 Chainz which abruptly progressed into a mashup of Knife Party’s “Fire Hive.” It was perfect because he had also played some reggae-esque songs a short time prior. After everyone completely lost it and headbanged, MiM0SA concluded on a softer tone, thanked his fans graciously and engaged us in a short chanting of his name similar to what you would experience at a hip hop show.

Though he has begun to experiment with the current trends in trap, MiM0SA still managed to deliver a show that was unique and maintained classic elements from his previous material. From his psychedelic visuals to his placid and multi-layered tracks, his audiences can easily become absorbed in his shows. He brings a different element to the dubstep genre and is a must-see for fanatics of the genre. MiM0SA will be making appearances at Electric Daisy Carnival in Chicago and TommorrowWorld in Fairburn, GA this summer.

FIREPOWER RECORDS to Release ‘Futures’ EP from KONEC May 28

FIREPOWER, the label is turning to the other side of the Atlantic with a new 4-track EP by 19 year-old producer Konec from Southampton, U.K. Already sparking serious interest with his earlier productions such as “Immortal” and “Forever,” the new FUTURES EP is set to cast him firmly into the spotlight.

Opening the EP, the title track’s panoramic soundscapes and winding melodies set the scene for proceedings, carried off into the night by a fierce drum & bass rhythm and warped bassline. Konec then teams up with singer Anna Yvette on “The Void” for the first of two collaborations on the EP. Showcasing a different shade to his productions, the track’s deep subs and shimmering chords blend with Yvette’s yearning vocals on this emotive slow burner. Up next “Kill City” is pure impact, blending the 808 swagger of trap with rolling 8-bit arpeggios and choice vocal shouts. To complete the EP, Konec teams up with friend and collaborator xKore on “Railgun,” a track as mercilessly ferocious as its title may suggest. Calling upon hardstyle for inspiration, its propulsive 4×4 skeleton drives a booming bassline and flailing synths built for destruction.

A little taste of whats to come!

Showcasing a talent way beyond his years, FUTURES is a bold statement from Konec. Bringing both depth and diversity to the four tracks on offer here, it is no wonder so much attention is starting to come his way.

Best Buy Theater has recently become more popular among the EDM community since they began featuring well-known artists from a variety of genres. Drum and Bass/Dubstep pioneers Dirtyphonics were brought to the spacious venue’s stage on May 10^th. The four Parisian men formed in 2004 and were eventually signed on to AudioPorn Records in 2008. After releasing an EP and a number of remixes on additional labels such as Mau5trap and Ultra Records, they were asked to join Dim Mak Records in 2012. Dirtyphonics bring a unique approach to the Drum and Bass genre and favor heavier bass tones. Their musical influences include Metallica, Korn and Pendulum, which is very evident in their tracks. They know how to dissolve any room into fun chaos by bringing high energy and impactful tunes to their audience’s eardrums.

Though Best Buy Theater was not sold out, it made for an atmosphere more conducive to raving- people were spinning poi, orbiting and of course gloving. The crowd was fairly young, but it brought a level of unrelenting liveliness to the space that equally matched and may have even surpassed the Dirtyphonics’s at times. Being in the very front row, against the barrier had unimaginable perks- the members gave out water, hugs, crowd-surfed and even gave us STAMPS on our arms, hands, faces and cleavages. The latter was something I have never seen or experienced at any show and it made them stand out as a group that strives to interact with their fans and make their shows set the bar for other artists in their genres.

From the moment the curtains dropped to reveal their stage set up, everyone was hyped up and ready to GET DIRTY! Beginning with Drum and Bass, Dirtyphonics immediately slammed us with heavy-hitting beats and never let down throughout the entirety of their set. They did change it up at times when they chose to segue into a few trap and dubstep sections, which was well-received and added another level of excitement. The major highlight was when their Beatport chart-topping remix of Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” was suddenly dropped toward the end of the night. I don’t think many people were expecting it because the energy surged just as abruptly as the transition into the track. To bring the show to a close, they decided to incorporate an essential element of rock and roll concerts- an encore! In my experience, encores are a rarity in the EDM world so when they do occur, it’s very much appreciated. They reminded us of their metal-head roots by concluding with a hard rock song that eventually broke down into drum and bass. Everyone was so amped through to the end that a mosh pit developed! It was unbelievable and made this one of the more memorable shows I’ve ever attended.

Dirtyphonics clearly takes pride in what they do and put it on display by showing off their skills when they held up their equipment and proceeded to fabricate beats in front of everyone’s eyes. They also exclaimed that they were playing live rather than using laptops, which is the norm. I think people tend to appreciate the “live” aspects because it’s distinctive and really sets them apart from other artists. Dirtyphonics also showed their appreciation of their fans when they held a brief meet-and-greet after the performance. Hands down, these French guys are an act to be on the watch for because they really know how to bring it and tear a house apart! Be sure to listen to their first full-length album, “Irreverence” out on Dim Mak Records.

Up and Coming Artist Spotlight: JOEL JUNGELL

Joel Jungell is a 26 year old Music Producer/DJ from Sweden who is currently studying to become an Audio Engineer in NYC. He is the winner of Sensation White’s DJ Competition back in 2009. He is currently managing the label, Incalzando Records, with 2 other people, Raffael De Luca & Octavian Popescu.

Although his signature sound sways from Traditional, Deep and Minimal house, his style doesn’t stop there. With soulful productions that also linger in the Electronica branch of dance music, Jungell shows us his ability to infuse different variations (posted below).

Jungell successfully brings us back to connecting strong emotions through rhythm and dance with melodic Tech house productions like “In Your Tears” (posted below).

And of course, an original Deep house production (below) filled with beautiful piano melodies, and bright ambient textures; once again prove how versatile his style can be.

Output is the kind of nightclub that gets straight to the point. Being one of the newest in NYC, impressively it already possesses a certain level of sophistication that only a few ever attain. The nostalgia reminds you that the DJ is no more a rockstar than anyone else within those four walls. There’s no propaganda, no gimmicks, no VIP, and oh yeah, definitely no standing still. Boasting the impressive Funktion One sound system, Output has unofficially earned the title of “best system in America” by DJ’s and club-goers alike, and for good reason. Taking it back to the early days of techno, the new Sunday parties at Output seem to attract just the right crowd to complete the perfect equation; the people that know the deep-rooted essence of true dance music, celebrating the journey, under one roof.

There was a huge buzz in the dance music community as soon as it was announced that Joseph Capriati would be laying down one of his rabbit hole sets for New York City. The hype was even further escalated when the Brooklyn native, Danny Tenaglia announced there would be a very “special” guest dj opening that night. If you were able to connect the dots, you knew Cinco de Mayo was gonna get just a little crazier.

We arrived at the spot fairly early, and to our pleasure, saw DT behind the decks. The club was spotted with people, all in the unspoken dress code, black. Danny took us back to the 90′s and showed us that “music is the answer” by playing smooth, funky tracks to get the crowd grooving. The dance floor was packed early and showed no sign of loosening up. Around 8, DT grabbed the mic and announced Capriati’s flight had just landed and he would be making his appearance within the hour. The club roared with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

As soon as everyone caught their first glimpse of Capriati behind the booth, all of us lost it. He seamlessly transitioned into his set, around 9PM, with everyone in a mad frenzy. The next four hours were just an unrelenting barrage of dark, twisted tracks from the likes of Len Faki, Jonas Kopp, Ben Sims, Speedy J and many, many more. One of my personal favorites, Nicole Moudaber’s “Roar”, ramped up the energy even further as 2-steppers battled it out all over the club to the thumping kicks. The heavy bass lines detained us all in a hypnotic state the entire evening. Around 1AM, Capriati closed out his set with the only smooth tune heard all night: The Superpitcher remix to MFA’s “The Difference It Makes”. We snapped back to reality as the music faded out, suddenly realizing it was Monday morning, as Guiseppe sincerely thanked his followers that made it out, and promised he would return soon; maybe even go back to back with Danny himself!

The experience that Output creates, in combination with the talent Benny Soto brings in, is unheard of in NYC anymore. JC smashed the decks on Cinco de Mayo, and brought a sense of affirmation along with him. An affirmation that techno is still alive and kicking. We’re all eagerly looking forward to see what else Output can do for the greatest city in the world.

The Undrgrnd Wilderness

There are a few places that the OG music family can get back to it’s roots this festival season. Amongst the endless sea of neon and bro-tanks there are some gems for the old style of festival raging to live on; this summer one of the Undrgrnd Sound destinations will be “Upstate” New York (I say “upstate”, because anything above the Bronx is considered wilderness by the city folk) for the 12th year of Camp Bisco!

This particular party girl comes from “upstate” and is no stranger to going into woods to hear music… At least this time I don’t need to cut down trees before the party and roll a keg away from advancing police!

Obviously, music is the light that gets these festival bugs sucked in, however there is more than music. This is an experience. This is a culture. Camp Bisco is like it’s own type of festival fraternity. So aside from the music, this is something to look forward to.

Make Sure You Are Familiar With The Epic Lineup!

Tent City

Personally, I am most excited for the tent experience. Tents are such an important component to the festival experience: think about the dirt, the sharing and just coming and going while lounging under the sun. Tents are an amazing way for campers to simply focus on the performance they are interested in. . . . although I must say, part of the festival adventure is finding new things and seeing new things.

I am truly looking forward to Night 0, when all the campers arrive the night before the weekend begins. This avoids lines, and creates a pre-game and well what we can imagine is truly “preparation” for the three day musical journey.

How the hell am I going to find my tent? High ground also sounds like the best area to park a tent, God-forbid it pours out and I get a river of piss, streaming down to my tent. I gag at the thought. I imagine a huge flag would be a helpful searching mechanism.

Vending tents. We know what that means.

Friendship Level Up

Wandering thought: Many people find they have their “style” and stick to it, or the groups. . . but at festivals part of the wonderful experience is how open everyone is to new experiences. Festivals are amazing in a huge group of friends or dancing alone. Just keep in mind, usually when you find yourself reaching behind you for your initial group of friends, the most likely reality is that a new group of friends will be there.

At every festival experience there is a certain type of bond that is created. These are friends that you have no need to explain yourself to. By this, I mean that you do not need to explain when you have removed your clothes and started making out with a tree.

The types of people at any given music festival goes somewhere between the hardcore druggie who is there to simply flip as much candy as possible to the über fan to the kid who wound up there cause so-and-so had an extra ticket. It is perfect to all flow together throughout the three days and have stories based on the insanity, discussion and moments shared. At the end, you got a whole list of people to add on Facebook, assuming that they gave you their real name and not their party name. For sure, not one person will want to find you on LinkedIn after this weekend.

Veteran DJ and Brooklyn native, Victor Calderone put on an impressive set Saturday night at one of Brooklyn’s newest clubs, Output. A true club DJ, spinning for what adds up to be a full workday, instead of those that come play for a few hours and dip, Calderone rocked the house all night from when it opened at 10 till the place closed at 6 in the morning.

The Williamsburg venue was super easy to get to and parking wasn’t really that bad when we showed up around 11:30. The line moved quickly, and I didn’t see anyone getting hassled too much at the door by the bouncers. When I started to explore the place I discovered the layout was great, very accessible and open. It’s not a huge place like Webster Hall, and had a balcony setup around the dance floor like Terminal 5. Booths lined the upstairs, and there was plenty of room to dance in front of them. There were no velvet ropes or VIP crap, and you could see the stage from pretty much everywhere in the club.

One thing I liked about the place was that there was no photography allowed. I mean, everyone likes taking picture and videos when they’re out, but when you look around and all you see is camera flashes at groups of girls giving their best duck faces, or a dude in the middle of the dance floor not dancing cuz his hand is up in the air trying to get a video of the DJ; it’s just not what clubs or DJs like to see. You’re supposed to just enjoy the experience, not document it. I saw bouncers strictly enforcing this rule throughout the night.

With Victor in the house, it was obviously a jungle house/trance night. We came in to some dope dark and funky jungle beats being played, good for the early in the evening. I liked that before 1:30, the volume of the music wasn’t so deafening and that people could still hear each other and hold conversations. I zoned out for a bit, just listening and grooving to Victor’s upbeat trancey, kind of minimal flow. As the night progressed, the volume slowly rose with the intensity of the set. I’ll be honest, I never really followed Victor’s music, so I couldn’t even tell you what the names of the songs were being played. I just know that his flow was so flawless that I couldn’t even tell you when one song ended and another began. If I wasn’t a fan of Victor Calderone before, I definitely am now.

The build of a big jungle beat made the lights on the walls of Output brighten and change color until the bass peaked with the brightness of the lights and then they dropped with the drop. I liked that the lights weren’t used throughout entire songs. They were minimal and tasteful, like I didn’t feel like they would give someone a seizure. The sound system in the place was a top of the line Funktion 1 system with a great sound to it. Very crisp and clean.

I hit the dance floor for a while, which wasn’t terribly packed, and got down on some of those deep trance beats. As I looked around at the crowd, I saw a very limited amount of “bros.” It was a good cut of Manhattan and Brooklyn with a little Long Island. The 21 and over rule kept out the “kids” you see at Pacha and most music festivals. There was nobody in neon attire running around; no fuzzies, no tutus, no kandi kids. Ladies were dressed classy or trendy and the guys were casual and hip in fresh graphic tees, to button downs, to collared plaid shirts and jeans. Later on in the night, some even had no shirts. Maybe this was just the Calderone crowd. Experienced partiers, veteran ravers, grown-ups that unwind Saturday nights by dancing out the stress of the week to some deep jungle house music.

The crowd was mature and even with the club filling up, there were still great vibes coming from everyone. I got to talking to some people around me. I met a surgical technician, a manager of a Jeep dealership, a nurse, an MTA train engineer, an anesthesiologist, a corporate technology salesman. Many of them have been Victor fans for years. One girl I spoke with, Dagmara, a 29 year old Calderone fan who’d been coming to see him for over seven years, told me that she found Output to be a breath of fresh air compared to Webster and Pacha.

By 3am, the beats got deeper and harder. More bass, bigger builds and drops, lights got crazier and crazier. The crowd was thick and everyone was groovin and feelin’ Victor’s heavy jungle beats. Throughout the night, the intensity of the set got higher and higher, feeding off the energy of the crowd. Calderone is obviously a seasoned DJ, keeping people dancing without all the “how’s everyone feelin tonight!” or “this is my new track with so-and-so!” on the mic. He just played and played and played. The way he transitioned through the set and slowly built it up throughout the night, you could tell he’s used to keeping a crowd going for a long long time. He threw in a sample of vocals I recognized from Shakedown’s song- At Night, and kept the beat going with his progressively darker, more tribal beats. Even by four in the morning, there were still spots all over to dance comfortably, and the vibe of the crowd got better and better.

One thing I like about EDM shows in NYC is randomly finding old friends. I ran into someone I used to work with as a lifeguard years ago, and even found one of my best friends from college! By 5am, my feet had had enough in the six-inch heels I was rockin’, so we called it a night. It was still pretty crowded, so even though the designated finish-time was 6am, Victor may have stayed on even longer than that.

On the way home, and for the rest of the night, I could still hear that funky tribal bassline running through my head. My friend and I recounted the night and were both very happy with our experience at Output. Absolutely a place we would both come back to. I myself, found another great DJ to add to my list of artists to check out in the future, as well as a genre of EDM that I had never really given a chance before.

Grand Opening June 2nd of “Patio Sundays” Freeport L.I.

I’m very excited for our Sunday party series at The Patio this summer. The party is being thrown by myself, the NetwerQ Ent. crew and Louie Romas (aka Louie Vegas) who will also be one of our resident DJ’s. Last year Louie ran this party himself and set a good foundation which we’re building on for this summer. I decided to stop by one of his events last summer with ViVa Music’s Ralph Berr and fell in love with the vibe, I was pretty much there every Sunday after. It’s a very unique experience for New York and reminded me of what I felt when I was at places like Cafe Mambo and Blue Marlin out in Ibiza; deep techno mixed with great food, sunshine, beautiful views and cool people. This is a venue located in Freeport, NY right along the water separate from the over-saturated bar scene of the Nautical Mile.

The town of Freeport elected a new Mayor this year who is a huge supporter of small businesses which really helped with some of the renovations that were made at the venue including a brand new stage for talent as well as a much better sound system. The cool thing about this party is there are many ways to enjoy it, you can come dance, have a meal away from the dance floor with friends, receive bottle service at a table near the party or any combo of these. The parties will start around 2pm every Sunday with the doors opening at 12pm for those who want to get an early start eating or drinking before the music kicks on. They will carry on into the evening and the view of the sunset along the water is definitely a plus. You can expect bigger names through out the season along with well respected locals who will maintain the great atmosphere this party has. The grand opening is June 2nd, stop by to see what Patio Sundays are all about.

A newcomer to the NYC EDM scene, Electric Candy Land Events has been producing heavy-hitting events featuring rising artists and local talent. Their events have been held at Stage 48, a swanky, intimate venue, thus far. Rather then sticking to a regular nightclub model, ECL strives to maintain a festival approach, where attendees are encouraged to dress in rave garb, use LEDs and perform flow arts. Contributing to EDC NYC weekend, ECL will be bringing Hard Rock Sofa and Bambi to the tables on Friday, May 17^th for an after-party that is sure to keep everyone raging all night!

Hard Rock Sofa

The Russian duo, comprised of Alexander Shapovalov and Denis Chepikov are known for their energetic performances and ability to deliver consistently great shows ranging from festivals to warehouse raves. Spinning their take on House music, Hard Rock Sofa has quickly risen to fame across the globe, their most popular hit “Blow Up” topped Beatport’s top 100 chart in a matter of days. Bambi

Eva Shaw aka Bambi is a fairly new face to the scene yet, she has made prominent strides in her career. A beautiful Dutch-Canadian and one of the few female Progressive and Electro house DJs, she has performed at many famous clubs including Pacha, Marque Las Vegas and soon Revel Club in Atlantic City. Based in New York City, she has spun alongside the likes Bob Sinclair, Steve Aoki and was most recently asked to headline for David Guetta’s “F*** Me I’m Famous” party in Las Vegas. Since she has begun to produce, you can anticipate her being featured at more shows in the very near future.

As a function of his condition, Vinter thinks through compositions in seconds, often completing up to three tracks per day. To date Aleksander has composed and produced over 10,000 songs in various genres; most notably metal, orchestral/classical, hip-hop and electronic.

“Some days I make up to 10 songs. Some days just 2. I’ve had a continuous creative flow since the day I started dreaming music. And I have been producing non stop for 15 years now. Massive Event & Digital Distortion kicked off their seasonal residency at Santos Party House, presenting Kyau & Albert for their “Nights Awake” album release party. This was the first “Pharmacy Friday” at the venue and they couldn’t have selected better talent. The German trance duo did NYC justice with an enjoyable night filled with nothing but great vibes and an even better set, to go along with it.

The eclectic and unpredictable Noomi Ra was staged to open up for K&A. The up and coming jockey brought his wide range of music to the tables as he set the tone for the evening with his “electric trouse” style dance music and got the club jumping early on in the evening. With a fairly packed house, he effortlessly took hold of the atmosphere and demanded attention with an aggressive set. The music was loud, drinks were pouring in VIP, and hands were raised throughout the entire dance floor.

At exactly 1AM, Ralph and Steve took to the decks and ramped it up. Not only did they continue to hit us hard, but their energy behind the booth was unparalleled. It was the first time I had seen the duo live, and it was truly an enjoyable experience. With the venue already being pretty intimate, K&A made it even more so, by throwing t-shirts, giving high fives, and handing out their new album to party-goers.
Ralph especially helped us stomp the floor as tracks like Sander van Doorn’s edit of Inpetto’s, Shhh!, were mashed up with the dutch favorite, Epic. The crowd roared with delight as the New World Punx’s, Loops and Tings blessed our ears and made everyone’s hands go high up in the air. Kyau & Albert did an impeccable job of “free-writing” their set as they started slowing down around 3, playing A&B’s “A Thing Called Love”, and then took us back a couple of years, throwing on their own edit of Mr. Brightside. They slowed down around 4, and after the show the crowd saw that these two have a profound love for what they do, as it was transparently shown throughout the entire night. The “good feelings” vibe was absolutely still present long after, and that, in my opinion is what really makes the performance unforgettable.

All in all, Pharmacy Friday started off with a bang. Kyau & Albert set the bar high and now we’re all anxiously looking ahead to see what this season holds for Santos Party House.

OUTPUT has taken the dance community by storm. The indescribable atmosphere at OUTPUT has left many vexed with excitement. The venue has raised the standards of NYC nightlife. Alexi Delano is known as the international man of music. He has been part of the electronic music scene since the late 80′s. Hailing from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Ferry Corsten’s lustrous career is exemplified by a passion for music that began as a hobby and spiraled into a full-blown profession. Paul Van Dyke

For over two decades, the world has known Paul van Dyk as one of Germany’s most successful musicians and as one of the ultimate superstars of electronic music. He has pioneered the Trance & Progressive movement from its earliest roots. As an artist, DJ, and producer, Paul has surpassed various milestones over the course of his career, including: being twice voted the world’s No.1 DJ. He has remixed the likes of Madonna, Justin Timberlake, U2 and Depeche Mode. Earning a Grammy nomination and accepting the “Order of Merit” from the state of Berlin are just two of Paul’s numerous accomplishments and accolades for his talents. So beware, although you may think this will be just another Prog House d , you’re in for a wild ride!

Flosstradamus

Their live act packs a punch of bass for all sorts of fans, EDM and hip hop while sampling live on stage. They make a set list, trigger loops, songs, and layer acapellas on an APC 40 while using a Novation Launch Pad, the touchAble app running on an iPad, and Traktor. Playing mostly originals and remixes, they have stocked up on tunes for the name Flosstradamus. From playing a show for 5 people, to touring internationally playing sold out shows on the Flosstradamus name, Chicago’s finest hip-hop producers had humble beginnings and now have wide-spread fame. Almost everyone knows the Flosstradamus name now. If you didn’t know, you’ve probably heard their remixes or songs at a party without knowing because they are definitely a driving force that will not be stopped for years to come. So let’s just say, if you saw their live performance at Ultra 2013 then you know that there is no reason why you should miss their upcoming live performance in the Mid-Atlantic!

Gareth Emery

Hailing out of the UK Gareth Emery is not your average DJ. Shunning major label attention, calling out the scene that he belongs to when it’s began to slip and head into the mainstream and even being adamant about handling all of his own music production (you would be surprised how many ghost producers their are). Gareth Emery spins a potent blend of trance, house, electro and techno and is concerned with creating a musical journey that will leave you begging for more!

Every show we have attended has been new and fresh and for someone who tours considerably that is a quite a challenge so lets get ready to hear Gareth open up your ears to some heavy Trance, techno and continue to create more slices of ‘anti-genre’ dancefloor gold for us to rock out too.

Excision

The name itself presents a terrifying image- a mangled, forced extraction, quite literally “removal by cutting”. It should come as no surprise that the sounds behind this name are just as filthy, brutal, and unforgiving as the namesake suggests. Excision shows are like no other- a virtual apocalypse of twisting and morphing sounds turn massive crowds into a frenzy, as virtual walls of bass are relentlessly impaled time and time again upon their fragile bodies and ears. We suggest you bring some ear plugs?? and maybe something for your eyes as the stage show he puts on with his giant LCD X on stage will leave you breathless! 1/3rd of Destroid will not disappoint!

Porter Robinson

Another example of Moonrise Festival doing everything it can, is bringing the freshest, youngest and greatest in EDM to Baltimore, Porter Robinson! Having achieve what some do in an entire career he has already provided tour support to Tiësto and Skrillex that led to him entering DJ Mag’s Top 100. Porter’s Spitfire EP showed that the US is putting out some amazing EDM talent by crashing Beatport’s servers on release & smashed its way to the #1 position in the process. Last year he toured non-stop with residencies in Vegas and even an Essential Mix on BBC but this summer Moonrise Festival was able to secure him just for you guys! Eiland is an Atlanta based artist, producer, dj and now label owner of Always Never; he is easily recognized by his signature sound which creates its own of electronic beats and electronic synth leads while keeping a punk-rock type of aggression. Originally beginning his career as an underground Atlanta dj, Eiland has now transformed into a internationally known artist playing festivals like Ultra Musical Festival in Miami and the Identity Festival which travels to many cities around the United States. Dirtyphonics

Pitchin, Pho, Charly and Thomas other wise known as the four awesome frenchmen that make up DIRTYPHONICS, are coming back to New York this Friday on their Irreverance Tour! This group began their career together as Dirtyphonics back in 2004 with Charly, Thomas and Pho; Pitchin was soon added to the crew in 2008 to create this wild quartet. They can be described as a high energy, heavy bass EDM group.Its hard to group these guys into one genre of EDM music because they have produced drum n’ bass, dubstep, and crazy electro tracks over the past few years. Super Mash Bros

Forming in 2008 when they were just high school boys, Dick Fink and Nick Fenmore decided to pair up after pursuing individual DJ endeavors. Both were digital music artists and well-versed in all genres of music, hence the ease with which their tracks come together to form interesting masterpieces. They are known to mashup a wide variety of chart-topping and popular songs spanning nearly every decade. Their debut album, “Fuck Bitches. Get Euros” was predominantly heard on college campuses across the U.S. and was succeeded by “All About the Scrillions” and “Mile(y) High Club.” As one of the few artists today that focuses solely on mashups, Super Mash Bros know how to keep the genre fresh and keep their audiences partying throughout the night.

From the start Super Mash Bros brought the energy to the Ballrooom with an awesome mix of this year’s hit “Cannonball” by Showtek. They eventually segued into a mix of Dr. Dre and Eminem’s “Guilty Conscience” and followed up by Skrillex’s “The Devil’s Den.” Going from electro house to rap to dubstep, everyone was kept on their toes and never knew what to expect.

The highlights were definitely Dog Blood’s “Next Order” + “Gangnam Style” and Porter Robinson’s “Language” + the title theme from Space Jam. Some heavy-hitting curveballs were also thrown in such as “Sandstorm” by Darude + “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” and “Woo Boost” by Rusko + “What You Know” by T.I. Toward the end of the night, Super Mash Bros decided to get a bit nostalgic when they spun the Friend’s theme song and even brought a microphone to the crowd for a sing-a-long. Everyone could not resist chiming in with that as well as, “Party in the USA.” It brought a more comical element to the show, which was well-received. Even their visuals included popular things from the 90s era: Hey Arnold!, Bill Nye the Science Guy and furby all flashed across the screen at some point and allowed us to get lost in memories of childhood while still raging out to excellent music.

Though the turnout was lower than I had hoped, it made for a more intimate and carefree setting. Super Mash Bros showed their appreciation by giving the front row high fives and throwing two bouquets of flowers into the mass of sweaty people. The last couple of tracks were well-selected and quickly brought the assembly of ravers and clubbers back into rage mode: Swedish House Mafia’s party tune “Greyhound” and a sick mashup of Pendulum’s “The Island Pt. 1 Dawn” + the 2012 summer hit “Calling” by Alesso and Sebastian Ingrosso. To conclude their short one and a half hour set, Super Mash Bros played, probably the most random song of the night, “Scotty Doesn’t Know” from the film EuroTrip. The Ballroom suddenly became a rock concert with everybody jumping around, a bit of moshing and headbanging. It was an unusual way to end but, it served as a refresher and a reminder that rock can be appreciated by even the most hardcore EDM fans.

Commentary

By seriously taking Webster Hall’s typical attendees into account, Super Mash Bros were able to deliver a near-perfect show. The majority of the tracks were EDM mixes and clearly demonstrated how much they love to entertain and make sure that the crowd will enjoy themselves. I must admit I was not expecting to hear so many of my favorite songs and it made the night even better! The energy was consistent, every single person was clearly having a good time and their talent was blatantly put on display for us to see and hear. Although they will not be performing at any festivals this summer (based on their Facebook page and website), I’m sure they will be making another appearance at Webster Hall in the near future since they absolutely killed it! As summer approaches, you’d expect shows to be more crowded with everyone enjoying a night out on the town and attending events since they don’t have to troop around in the cold weather any more. But the most recent show I attended at Webster Hall for Girls & Boys was definitely different from most shows I’ve attended at there so far. Last Friday, Webster Hall presented the Watts Up Tour featuring Bay Area’s dubstep duo Helicopter Showdown, North Carolina’s up and coming group Clicks and Whistles with a very innovative style, and trap heavyweight and currently conquering the trap scene, the headliner for the night all the way from San Francisco, it was Antiserum.

I’m very accustomed to seeing the famous grand ballroom of Webster completely packed out, from the dance floor to the top mezzanines usually crowded to the point where you can’t move. Although some love and enjoy a sold out show and the vibe of a sold out show is definitely unmatchable I can agree, but in my opinion it’s hard to enjoy a show while you’re getting elbowed in the face during half of the show by people around you. That’s why I absolutely loved the crowd for this show; it was the perfect amount of people. It wasn’t packed to the point where you couldn’t breathe, but it had enough people so you didn’t feel like it was completely empty. Just enough people on the floor to create a nice crowd, and much more than enough room to dance.

CLICKS and WHISTLES

You had to have enough room to dance, because up first on the decks for this tour was Clicks and Whistles. Clicks and Whistles was considerably the most intriguing act of the night in my opinion. The production and DJ style is so different from what everyone is doing currently in the electronic scene; it’s great to see artists trying to keep it fresh and different from the hype and allowing themselves to not give in to the pressure to follow a certain scene or genre. Most DJ’s I’ve seen these days usually do the same thing for the genre they play, play the top 40 tracks from that genre at the moment, but not Clicks and Whistles. Bringing a set to the stage with tracks that were almost impossible to ID for me, it was amazing to hear new sounds and new songs I’ve never heard or would ever be able to find, being only able to label their style as “Future Bass”. The song selections contained blends from all elements of music, from heavy samples of classic rap songs, to new age trap, mixed with some drum & bass, and even touching upon slow R&B rhythms. One of the few tracks I was able to ID was their most recent song, UZ – Trap Shit √13 (Clicks & Whistles Remix), but the track that had me excited was a track from one of the most talked about producers in the scene at the moment, Cashmere Cat. Clicks and Whistles dropped Cashmere Cat’s newest Miguel remix “Do You…” In my opinion this song was the perfect way to describe Clicks and Whistle’s overall set. A song with smooth R&B vocals, setting off the perfect vibe to dance with your girl or just take a second to embrace the moment and music while faint kicks phase in to get you ready to dance to a drop with subtle melodic synths along with heavy kicks and the rolls of hi-hats that can’t help but move your hips. The set felt very cinematic and deep, with no errors in mixing and smooth transitions through the entire hour, Clicks and Whistles set the night off perfectly for New York City.

ANTISERUM

Before it was time for Antiserum to take the stage as the headliner for the night, I was able to talk to him for a bit before his set. With smiles and a humbling personality, Antiserum seemed anxious to hit the decks and rock the crowd. But it was almost as if I met Mikey (aka Antiserum) before the set, and when he went to the CDJs, the persona of Antiserum took over. Those smiles turned into a face that looked like he was ready for business and ready to show New York City how Antiserum gets down. If you’ve seen any trap artists recently, or heard any of their sets, it usually contains an Antiserum track. The man knows how to design tracks that impacts the crowd like no other artist in the trap scene at the moment. He’s collaborated with big artists like 12th planet and receiving support from headlining DJs like Skrillex, Diplo, Datsik, and Flux Pavillion, as well as artists on the rise and taking over like Bro Safari, ETC!ETC, Brillz, and Mayhem. Antiserum started off the night with one of his recent tracks with Mayhem called “Bangladesh” released on Datsik’s record label Firepower. This was a song that pretty much described how the night was to go; the song starts off with a cinematic trap introduction with vocal samples, giving the crowd the trap affect. While giving you that hip-hop influence, the song breaks down in the middle to a 4/4 hard kick that pumps you up for dancing and jumping at 140bpm, so that means those are some fast kicks amplifying the entire venue. While the kicks pumped you up the song slowly transitions into that hard trap synth that Antiserum is has been famous for, a sound design crafted with perfect reverb so well that it blends with any sound system to hit the venue with absolute force, all while you still dance.

I was actually able to ID a good amount of tracks from his set, considering he knew to drop the heaviest trap songs in the scene at the moment. Playing songs like Bro Safari – That Ass, Flosstradamus – Underground Anthem, UFO – It’s a Trap, Ree$e – Molly (LOUDPVCK Remix), Major Lazer feat. Flux Pavillion – Jah No Partial (Heroes X Villains Remix), The Partysquad – Go Down Low (Luminox Remix) and a hand full of others. Through the set you were able to hear his love for hip-hop since hip-hop vocals and samples cut in and out through the entire set, so hip-hop fans & EDM fans, all around enjoyed his set. But the song that had me most interested was his outro song, he announced it was a brand new song with Brillz that he produced which is unreleased, so I’m very excited for that song to release because for the outro, whatever energy the crowd had left for Antiserum they exploded with it and vibed out till the set finished. A man that used build-ups, perfect transitions, and well executed cues and proper song selections, Antiserum gave NYC a party and an epic show for the fans.

HELICOPTER SHOWDOWN

Helicopter Showdown was up next and boy-oh-boy what as an energetic set. I’m not usually a huge fan of Helicopter Showdown, but they knew how to get a crowd raging at 4am their hardest at 4am. If you don’t know Helicopter Showdown, they don’t follow the regular dubstep genre or use subtle synths, they’re all about the bro-step. Equipped with an arsenal of heavy sound design, Helicopter Showdown hit NYC with an impactful set full. I wasn’t able to ID a lot of their tracks, but the tracks I was able to ID was Porter Robinson – Spitfire (Kill The Noise Remix) which he used for the intro, and he dropped Killagraham – Clowns (Milo & Otis Unoriginal Mix) at a point in the night. Most of the songs kept to the heavy bro-step genre, but he transitioned around to some drum & bass with a little bit of trap into the set as well hence he dropped the Milo & Otis Unoriginal mix of Clowns. Although this wasn’t my type of dubstep that I usually listen to, you have to respect an artist that knows how to work a crowd and DJ properly when the results are right in front of you. One thing I was able to distinguish about Helicopter Showdown’s DJ style was the fact that he barely used builds up. A style I’ve seen with very few DJ’s, instead of using every build up from a song, he switches from drop to drop to drop and giving his set the element of impact or as the kids would say “straight bass in your face”. A set I very much still enjoyed, especially with all the room you had to dance and rage, it was over-all a great night at Webster Hall and very different from their regular crowds & shows. As always, Girls & Boys events know how to hold it down with a great roster of artists for their stage!

This upcoming Friday, Girls & Boys events will be bringing MiM0SA to the famous grand ballroom in New York City. Blissfully unconcerned with a world obsessed with categorization as a means of definition, MiM0SA crafts music for its own sake, defying expectations with genre bending soundscapes. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area and currently residing in Los Angeles, MiM0SA began producing at the tender age of 17. Blessed with an abundance of talent and an ear for sonic experimentation, this fan-favorite has quickly developed a name for himself as one of the West Coast’s top exports. And the word is spreading fast.

In just a few short years he’s shared the stage with Benga, Skream, Rusko, Datsik, Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar and Flying Lotus. He’s also played festivals and shows across North America, including Coachella, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man, Decibel Festival, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. To say that MiM0SA is on the rise is to miss the mark. Rather, MiM0SA has arrived. This past March found him headlining his first tour, as he criss-crossed the U.S., selling out major venues like Higher Ground (Burlington, VT), the Paradise (Boston, MA), and the Gothic Theater (Denver, CO). Not to mention stellar debut performances at legendary venues such as NYC’s Irving Plaza and The Fillmore in San Francisco. The words tireless and prolific don’t quite do MiM0SA justice. In one weekend he headlined Lightning in a Bottle, blasted over to Summer Camp, and finished off the weekend with a blistering performance Detroit Movement Fest.

Ever ambitious and constantly in search of new avenues to explore, MiM0SA recently formed his own record label: False Idol Musik. Thus far, the results have been staggering. The tracks on 58 Degrees are rare and beautiful, full spectrum sonic brushstrokes hovering in the ether. MiM0SA says, “Music is a healing process, you can find a resolution to your problems through melody.” One listen to 58 Degrees will make you a believer.

At present, MiM0SA is busy in the studio working on new music for a full-release. “I’m steering away from aggressive tones, but at the same time trying to find different avenues to get the same crowd response that a big bass drop would get.” And while the outcome of the work is yet to be determined, it’s clear that his versatility as an artist goes hand in hand with his refusal to be tied down by any particular sound or style. Speaking of variety, of late he’s been spending quite a bit of time in the lab with Sleepyhead, working on new tracks for their highly anticipated collaboration, “Naked Poetry,” which they will release under the moniker Sexytime. We’ll say it again, because it bears repeating, MiM0Sa has arrived.

Dub FX and Flower Fairy- Secret Street Show NYC

I had been anticipating this street show for weeks. DubFX had posted a status on his Facebook page asking if anyone wanted him to come to NYC. Nine days, 248 likes and 112 comments later, (including one from myself) he posted a picture of the New York City Parks Department street performing permit, and announced that he’d be in town april 17th for a secret street performance. With all the buzz surrounding the street show, they also decided to schedule a show at the Westway for fans to have an opportunity to see him there too.

Dub FX is the musical alias of Melbourne-born artist, Benjamin Stanford. His music is made by live-looping; recording and playing back audio samples in real time. His entire performance consists of him beatboxing and singing all the music for each track, live-looping and distorting his voice with effect pedals. Sometimes, like during this show, he has other musicians contribute using their instruments or voice. His style is a funky blend of reggae, hip hop, drum and bass and dubstep rhythms. His fiancee, Flower Fairy, (real name Shoshana Sadia,) has been performing with him since they met while he was performing in Manchester just over six years ago.It wasn’t until the day before that they released the details of the location for the street show. Tompkins Square Park, 2 pm. My friends and I arrived around 1:30 to see if we could catch him setting up, but as we wandered the park, Dub and Flower Fairy were nowhere to be found; although I could pick out a handful of people clearly there for the same reason I was.Not long after, Dub walked into the park with his mixing board bag on his back, along with Flower Fairy, and a few other hands to carry the rest of the equipment. A crowd of about a hundred people, some cheering for the beatboxer’s arrival, gathered around where he set his stuff down and tried to grab a good spot to watch the show. ” I was surprised there was so many people waiting for me, that was something new,” Mr.FX said after the show. The excitement was palpable in Tompkins square park, where everyone waited patiently for the beatbox-looping legend to start.While we waited, a few amateur beatboxers were killing some time with who they now found were fellow DubFX fans. A good friend of mine started spittin’ some rhymes and was actually gathering a small audience before he was interrupted by another rapper who I later found out referred to himself as Magic Hat-the human android beatboxer.

As DubFX was setting up, doing sound checks, making sure his MacBook was recording everything properly, etc; he did a lot of chatting with the crowd. He said, “usually I start and there’s nobody around and I have to build a crowd,” he laughed and added, “but you guys are already here!” As he finished setting up, he told everyone he brought some T-shirts to give us from his 2012 tour and to go grab some, ( I grabbed two!) and finally the show was ready to start.He started with what I recognized as “Made It,” an upbeat reggae track with a smooth, groovin’ bassline that metaphorically describes his music career. Dub added some more bass and a funky beat for the next track to set up Flower Fairy to jump in with her rendition of “Gingerbread Man.” Running in place as she’s rhyming about trying to catch the elusive cookie, she killed the track and got everyone jumpin’.

The dude that interrupted my friend, Magic Hat, was introduced by Dub FX as a fan he met in Washington. He had said he really wanted to jam with him and came to the New York show just to get the opportunity. He walks to the front, and two of his buddies joined him on stage to complete their crew “Cloud Nine.” Dub finished up the gingerbread man beat and changed it up to a bit of a more minimal bassline for Magic Hat, and layered some more beatboxed beats as he got ready to spit his verses.

Magic Hat gets down with some smooth dubstep dance moves, then grabs the mic and spits a fair number of 32′s. (32-bar verses; had to ask my friend with experience in the rap world exactly what you’d call that.) Magic Hat and his friends in Cloud Nine, who called themselves Nova Black, and The Prophet, took turns on the mic for about 10 minutes, until Dub FX stepped back in. I could sense that the crowd was kind of over them since we were all really there to see Dub FX and Flower Fairy, and not really to listen to these guys try to take over the show.

Dub threw down some more verses, some of which were spit in what I like to call his skitzo rap personalities, which I later found out he actually had names for. He then introduced his manager, CAde Anderson, who also happens to be a close childhood friend of Dub FX. CAde spit this ridiculous freestyle shouting out Dub FX and Flower Fairy and threw some info about the show later that night at the Westwod into the flow as well.

Dub then changed up the beat and added a heavy bassline, announced “bonus track time!”As he debated what to treat us with next, Flower Fairy came up and told him to drop a new track he had just finished writing. The first verse was about finding his soul mate, Flower Fairy, while the next was a verse thanking his fans. He mentions “Taking his show from the stage to street,” and in the next verse rhymed the name of every place he’s ever performed. He lets everyone know that he has CDs for sale and asks the crowd what a fair price to sell CDs would be in NYC. “Five!… Ten!… Fifty!… A dollar!” I heard coming from all over the crowd. They settle on ten bux, and as a few handfuls of people make their way to get a copy, Dub flows into his next track.

It’s a duet with Flower Fairy where he starts off singing about how they met. They both sing a very sweet “everyday is valentines day when I’m with you,” and he spits a few verses from the song “My funny valentine.” He throws in some lyrics from Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” that got everyone singing along. Flower jumped in and got down on a few verses about her man. As the song ended, Dub talks about being ADD and a Gemini, and says that it gives him sort of split personalities in his head. He says Flower Fairy loves and hates it, smiling and patting her on the head. He introduces his rap personalities, the higher pitched-filtered voice he called Lyric and the deeper filtered voice he calls Monsoon, and went on to lay out a few verses in each.

The beatboxing genius asks if there were any rappers in the crowd who would like to come up and freestyle. A rapper who was introduced as EVeryman got on the mic and tore up a few verses with a kind of old skool flow. EVeryman, I found out later, is from Portland, Maine and is currently an MC in LA. While he was up there, a guy with a trumpet asked Dub if he could come up next. Dub changed up the beat for him and the musician played a tune with the trumpet muted, harmonized with himself while dub looped them, and then he improv’d over the melody. This unnamed musician totally rocked out; like he literally had the whole crowd groovin’ with him.

Nova Black and the Cloud Nine crew jumped back on the mic and did their thing, then handed it off to a girl in a blue shirt and really cool sunglasses and red jeans. She called herself Jerrra Blues (yes, with three R’s; she wrote it in my notepad for me because I couldn’t hear her next to the speaker after she performed) and I gotta say, this chick had a really dope flow; like soulfully singing her rhymes which were obviously adapted to fit the trumpet harmonies. Another girl, named La Rò, asked to jump in on the trumpet improv, and Dub handed her the mic. She amazed the crowd, coming out with this modern take on scat singing that I’ve never really heard before. She threw in a few verses in a language I couldn’t pick out, all while the trumpet continued to improv in the background.

I asked Dub after the show about all the fans that came up and participated. “I like people coming up and jamming when I do street shows. If people are willing I will always get them up, always.” He said, “I like the Interaction, the moment, plus it means I don’t have to think that much”

Dub grabbed the mic and told the crowd that they only had five more minutes until the guy came to pick up his speaker equipment he rented. So he started a beat that I recognized as their song “Fly a Kite,” which several people had been yelling for him to play earlier, (including myself I must admit. I love that song.) He looked around for Flower Fairy, who ran to the little girls room at the moment he decides he wants to play one of my favorite songs. CAde grabbed the other microphone as Dub changed up the bassline to set up the song, “No Rest for the Wicked.” CAde killed some verses and freestyled a few plugs again for the show that evening, and finally Dub closed out the set.

After the show, Dub FX and Flower Fairy packed it all up, but stuck around for another half hour to talk and take pictures with literally every fan that approached them. I asked Flower Fairy about her very first show in NYC, ”I liked the vibe here, mainly- that’s my number one.” Although she admitted the crowd was a bit intimidating when she first showed up,”I was a little nervous actually, I was like – oh wow, look at all these people.” She and Dub FX should be used to huge crowds, as they’ve played all different sized venues all over the world for the last few years, and even made an appearance both weekends at Coachella this month. I’ll be keeping an eye out for their next New York show, since they both said that although this was their first show here in the big apple, it definitely won’t be their last.

Erratic presents Terence Fixmer and Edit Select at Sullivan Room 4.27

Erratic definitely lived up to their name last night with a brilliant showcase. Bringing two revered techno legends to New York City, Terence Fixmer made his highly anticipated U.S. debut along with the U.K. techno legend, Edit Select. If you were looking to sweat, the Sullivan Room was definitely the place to be on Saturday April 27.

Straight from the get go, Jason T. and LoKKoTRONN took the decks and impressively maintained a high energy level, not only through the music, but also interacting with the people below. Tribal-like sounds, mixed with suspenseful builds and pounding drops, the crowd started to take to the floor and let loose. With the early party-goers consisting of mainly West Village residents, the dance floor started filling up around 12:30 a.m.. Things started to get a bit more… erratic (pun intended).

Terrence Fixmer

After Dos Lokos set the perfect tone for the evening, the long-awaited moment had come. Terence Fixmer took the stage around 1AM, introducing NYC techno-heads to the sounds of experimental-raw European minimalism. Starting off with an ID that sounded quite similar to Keith Fullerton Whitman’s Generator 6, Fixmer hit us with bone-chilling waves of synth, mixed with eerie vocals, and wasted no time, hammering the crowd with bass line after bass line. The atmosphere was deep as he dropped Psychose, a brand new track off of his new Psychik EP. With ample space, there were dance circles along the entire floor as some exhausted partygoers came out of the VIP area to join in on the action.

Tony Scott

Leaving all of us all wanting more, Terence stepped off the decks around 2:30 to bring the boss of Edit Select Records, Tony Scott, up on stage. At this point, the only patrons populating the venue were avid techno heads. Ears perked he lights dimmed, the crowd went silent, and the vibe grew darker as you looked up and the only image visible, was Tony bathed in a midnight red that emanated from the kinetics above. The only sound was that of a hypnotic lull coming from the speakers, growing louder by the second. As the 4/4 rhythm kicked unexpectedly, there was a “ooh” released in unison from everyone as the floor shook under the pressure of stomping feet and it was back to the experimental techno once again. Tony certainly read the crowd well, speeding up to 132, back down to 126, lulling everyone for minutes at a time with a calm, yet lurking hum.

By the end of the set, it seemed as though all four jockeys left everyone yearning for more. It was a great show, with great talent, the likes of which seems to be found mainly in the eastern hemisphere. Erratic got it oh so right. We can’t wait for their next big showcase.

This Friday, Girls & Boys events at Webster Hall brings you a funky line-up with a headliner that’s been touring worldwide and dominating the scene. Along with up & coming acts that you will surely know, taking to the stage this Friday will be Brooklyn’s own Denis Jasarevic aka Gramatik with HeRobust and Cherub.

Gramatik

Good music is felt and not heard. At an early age Slovenia born Gramatik showed precocious signs of a musician, absorbing radio transmissions of old Funk or Rhythm & Blues joints, and taking classic piano classes. After two years of this and later private piano lessons of early Rock and Rhythm & Blues, he helped form the youngest band in history at his elementary school. While still in middle and high school he discovered Hip Hop and left his band to become one of the first MC’s on the Slovenian coast. By 1998 he and his classmate formed a duo called Bow Down and threw the first Hip Hop party in the history of his hometown. That same year he also met his first audio sequencing software program and with humble beginnings started to produce two years later. Captured by the craft and magic of producing he discovered sampling, which became his one true love in the music making process, chopping up all those old Funk, Soul, Blues and Jazz tracks he used to listen to all the time and making something completely new.

Mixing that electro thump with the sample-heavy boom-bap of hip-hop, it was an older sister with a large cassette collection who turned the young Gramatik on to tapes of funk, jazz, R&B, and other genres that naturally lent themselves to dance floors. By the time he was 13, he was making beats on his PC, and by the time he was in his late teens, his productions had earned him a loyal fan base and, eventually, the attention of the Colorado-based Pretty Lights. The like-minded producer signed to Gramatik to his Web label, also dubbed Pretty Lights, and released his Beatz & Pieces, Vol. 1 album in 2011. The #DigitalFreedom EP followed in 2012 along with Gramatik’s new apartment in Brooklyn.

Cherub is a sexy, avante garde, electro-pop duo that is the dance love-child of 80’s funk, and pop-music from the future. The members of Cherub: Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber, share a love for honest original musi and vibrant live performances. With a common goal to share a little bit of sex, a little bit of drugs, and a whole lot of love with people across the globe, Cherub’s music is a fresh electrified take on risqué pop music. Steez Promo is bringing a great selection of artists to the Mid-Atlantic! Downtown Baltimore was never ready for Phase 1 of Moonrise. Phase 2 announcement just rocked the Baltimore residents even more! This madness is set to take place June 8th and 9th from 11am-11pm at Sun Park with over 50 acts in total, 20 of which were just announced on the 16th.

The Next Phase

The Phase 2 announcement brings huge amounts of talent to an already serious lineup. From house and progressive acts like Eric Prydz, Congorock and Feenix Pawl, to the biggest names in dubstep – Nero (DJ set), Borgore, Skism, Krewella and more. Phase 2 lineup has something for everyone.

Keeping up with the diversity in genres, the inclusion of popular dubstep acts such as Borgore and even the legendary progressive house(hold) name Eric Prydz, is making Moonrise an event to contend with.

Although, I am not to sure about the decision to add Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion to a seemingly epic re-vamp of an amazing festival. If I were attending, I would be most excited to see Xilent and Emancipator since they are rapidly ascending the EDM ladder.”

Two Nights With Bassnectar In Boston 4.25/26

House of Blues is a multi-location music venue that features artists spanning all genres, from jazz to indie rock to EDM and on April 25th and 26th, Bassnectar held one of his classic two part showcases at the Boston location. In 2001, Lorin Ashton began his esteemed music project as an open-sourced experiment in order to explore the relationship between community and music. The San Francisco native, who sports a strong background in art and music eventually grew very rapidly in the EDM scene and soon established his own record label, Amaphorus Music, of which he is the head producer. Some of the chart-topping releases from his label include Wildstyle, Vava Voom and most recently, the Freestyle EP from fall 2012. Bassnectar’s musical influences include everything he has ever heard, so his sound tends to be extremely diverse. What brings it all together is his focus on heavy, wobbling basslines that Bass Heads, have come to know and love.

Night 1

Thursday began with Michael Menert who set the tone with very smooth, Pretty Lights-esque tunes. I took this as the calm before the bass storm that was set to hit us. Once Bassnectar walked on stage, everyone was immediately ready for whatever he was going to deliver. He began with “Encore” which was preceded with a countdown and an “ARE YOU READY?!” It was all too perfect. I also found it interesting that he began with that song, since it signifies the end. This show was a journey backwards through time- which was sort of confirmed when a visual of a clock was displayed toward the middle of his set. He also played “Matrix” and had accompanying visuals that were scenes from the film. Later on he included another scene from “The Fall”, a very artistic independent film.

The first day consisted of many tracks from Cozza Frenzy and even some remixes of popular rap songs such as, “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.” He segued into trap as well as drum and bass segments a few times. The major highlights were when he dropped a new track and when he played GTA, Henrix and Digital Lab’s “Hit It”- the crowd definitely went craziest at those times.

The general consensus is that the first day was more of a softer, mystical sound and visual journey; however, Bassnectar still managed to consistently maintain a lively energy throughout his performance. When he brought the evening to a close, he took a “family photo” of himself with the crowd in the background. From that moment he went on to drop a sick mix that began with a sample from The Prodigy’s “Omen.”

My jaw dropped in awe of how much familiar material he squeezed into a mere 2 hours, it made me realize that it’s the little things that really count and make an impact.

The Crowd

Bassnectar had clearly worked with the “House of Rules” (as it is affectionately known) security since there were many LED gloves, orbitals etc. While the audience from the previous night was more Bostonian, in that there were many people wearing Celtics and Red Sox paraphernalia but, this time around people were dressed in rave gear and hippie-ish garb. Based on what Archnemis threw down, I was assured that Bassnectar was going to command a completely different atmosphere that would consist of way more bass and heavy hitting tracks.

Night 2

For a second time in a row my ears were pounded with the bass-heavy beats being played by Archnemisis. Friday was significantly louder; it felt more packed and more akin to a rave scene. Nothing was the same as the previous night: crowd, songs or visuals. He definitely wanted us to get weird. The first thing that appeared on screen was an adorable puppy with lasers shooting out of its eyes. Most of the music was harder and the crowd responded by having their hands up the whole time. The energy never died down and everyone was amped from start to finish, there was no room for breaks. Beer and water showered from the mezzanine and fans waved flags with the “bass flower/wobble” insignia.

There were a lot of reggae and rock undertones to some of the tracks; he also played drum and bass in the beginning as opposed to the trippier songs from Thursday which served as a warm up. The visuals he used seemed to be pictorial representations rather than altered movie clips that coincided with what was being played. His set spanned speed metal, hardcore rock, and even included a moombathon-ish song that featured a sample from The B-52’s “Love Shack.” What also stood out was the change in order for some of the main events- the balloon drop and confetti guns were both set off much earlier on Friday, which was a good choice to keep up the energy. The musical highlights were when he dropped my favorites, “Timestretch,” “Bass Head,” a Sean Paul remix of “Wildstyle” and “the ping pong song.” When he played “Timestretch” the accompanying clock visuals and added layers of sound such as piano riffs, made it a more enjoyable and complex listen.

At the very end of the insane musical and temporal voyage, he surprised me by bringing a live show standard to EDM- an encore! A psychedelic tone was quickly set when The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” spilled from the speakers and trippy visuals were projected on the screens. It eventually brokedown into a harder mix with dubstep and rock elements. Even after he left us with a “Bassnectar Loves You,” written in the Red Sox font, people still stuck around to get their last bit of dancing in.

As an artist with inspirations drawn from Nirvana and other metal acts, Bassnectar is known for his signature intense, speaker-shattering sound. His use of samples from a wide array of genres as well as visuals from film, shows how well-versed he is in all forms of the arts. He never ceases to disappoint his fans and always acknowledges how much he appreciates them. His double-header shows are something everyone should see, since it truly demonstrates his talents and love for what he does. Even though his Spring Tour is almost finished, you can still catch Bassnectar at the following festivals: Spring Awakening in Chicago, Camp Bisco in New York, Hard Summer LA, Electric Zoo and Voodoo Festival in NOLA.

Webster Hall’s newest Saturday night events are back, that’s right it’s brite nites! Kicking off the first show with DallasK, second with A-Trak, third week with Myon and Shane 54, and now we have Los Angeles’s own Super Mash Bros! Mash-Up Artists, DJ’s, Computer Musicians, Video Artists, call them what you will. They don’t care as long as it makes you want to party that much harder. Nicolas Fenmore, Dick Fink and Ethan Dawes collectively known as Super Mash Bros., grew up in Los Angeles. Somehow, the trio simultaneously manages to be full-time college students as well as full-time touring artists.

It’s the story of three kids with a passion for music and media. Dick: the software, tech, computer geek, semi-pro snowboarding, Pabst Blue-Ribbon drinking bro. Nick: the classically trained musician, stock trading, Johnny Walker Blue drinking bro. Along with new addition, Ethan Dawes: The digital pyrotechnician who incorporates viral content, projections, and the web world into their set. The three have established a strong friendship and musical synergy that gives way to their ass shaking, foot stomping mixtapes and performances.

The Super Mash Bros. have managed to take their career from the basement to the masses. Due to their very well received releases “Fuck Bitches. Get Euros.” and “All About The Scrillions” they’ve been able to take their party across the country. Super Mash Bros established themselves as consistent and prolific producers with their follow up albums “All About the Scrillions” and “Mile(y) High Club”. These party paratroopers will touch down in a city with nothing but a couple of laptops and music scientifically proven to make booties bounce, leaving a sea of sweaty, and satisfied partiers in their wake. In late 2009 the duo teamed with Ethan Dawes, who added stunning visuals to an already bananas live show. Ethan has now moved on to his own filmmaking, but the original duo Fink and Fenmore has kept the party going strong. Things moved quickly with these guys and over the last three years Super Mash Bros moved from valley backyards, to major college campuses, and let’s not forget Lollapalooza, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Zoo and Summer Set Festival. Their latest release, the “Pure Fix Mix”, shows that Super Mash Bros have no intention of slowing down, which brings music to the ears of partiers everywhere and will be hitting the Webster Hall stage this Saturday, so make sure to be there!

Post Game: ‘brite nites’ ft. Myon & Shane 54 4.27

Recently named one of the best nightclubs in the US, Webster Hall has expanded their EDM event series to include Brite Nites. On Saturday, April 29th Myon and Shane 54 brought their trance act to the Grand Ballroom. Born in Hungary, the duo formed in 2008 after producing and DJing separately for a few years. They are mostly known for trance and mashups and have been featured on Armin van Buuren’s ASOT compilations. After being signed to Armada, they released two full albums: International Departures Soundtracks and International Departures, Volume 2. This is also the name of their weekly podcast.

The Crowd

Webster Hall really managed to incorporated the previous series, Circus Saturdays into Brite Nites. Not only was everyone entertained with excellent music, but the visually stunning acts to keep our attention- an aerial artist, neon-clad go-go dancers and the mesmerizing fire spinning duo.

The Ballroom was filled with the usual haze, Kandi ravers and of course the bottle crowd. The openers, Mike Chach and DJ Jess were getting New York prepped with some hard-hitting electro house. My favorite anthem, “Cannonball” by Showtek was dropped, and I lost my shit to that.

Myon and Shane 54

Beginning with some vocal trance and gradually ramping up to electro house, everyone was amped and ready to dance. I felt as if I was at an indoor music festival, people were on friend’s shoulders, there was a girl using a flag printed with “A State of Trance: The Expedition” as a cape and everyone was jumping and dancing in perfect synch with the music.

Myon and Shane 54 did a bang-up job of keeping everyone hyped up by interacting with audience via microphone. At one point, they stepped forward to grab a fan’s shirt and sign another’s sneaker. Although they focused on trance, they featured a good number of mash-ups and a few mainstream electro house songs. I thoroughly enjoyed when they dropped a remix of the classic sing-along “Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Trap. Another unexpected track was mash up that featured samples from one of Seven Lions’ songs. The major highlights were Zedd’s “Clarity” and “Spectrum” and also later on, W&W’s remix of Armin van Buuren’s “This Is What It Feels Like.” Everyone sang along and the energy dramatically increased with the sounds of familiar anthems from this year.

Trance at Webster Hall

Myon and Shane 54 managed to come up with a very diverse set, while still sticking to their trance roots. The constant alternation in segments between electro house, hard-hitting anthems and vocal trance established an atmosphere where everyone would enjoy what was being heard. They encouraged everyone to participate by cutting the vocals from tracks such as Above and Beyond’s “Sun and Moon” and threw in some surprises like “Easy” by Porter Robinson and Mat Zo (I went absolutely insane because I had not heard this played at an event yet).

Considering Webster Hall isn’t known for having Trance artists on their roster, it was obvious the crowd was not going to be filled with the regulars. Most of the faces I recognized were actually faces I recognized from other Trance events throughout the city.

Myon and Shane 54 brought everyone back to their roots, bringing night to a close with some classic vocal trance songs. Trance vocals and beats brought a new dynamic to the bass-heavy mega club. Lets keep our fingers crossed for more trance DJs being featured at Webster Hall.

On an afternoon somewhere in the beginning of 2007 two friends decided to join forces, one DJ and one producer, both sharing great passion for House music. Bassjackers was born! & on May 11 2013 they are making their way to the Capital of the Free World D.C. Echostage!

Bassjackers a.k.a. Marlon Flohr and Ralph van Hilst didn’t realize what was in store for them when they joined forces in 2007 and lets just say that it has been a madhouse! 4 years of non stop production, sweat & hard work paid of in 2011 when their beast of a track Mush Mush was released on Tiesto’s “Musical Freedom”! This was the tipping point for Bass Jackers and the Beatport charts had “Mush Mush ” in the top 10 for several months.

After their discovery by Tiesto DJ after DJ started incorporating no just “Mush Mush” but other tracks of Bass Jackes into their sets and their fame skyrocketed. It was clear Bass Jackers were not a one hit wonder and would be prevelant in the music industry from that point on. Just to namedrop; Tiësto, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Afrojack, Sander van Doorn, Martin Solveig, Calvin Harris, Benny Benassi, Judge Jules, the list of support is endless!

From that point on remixing for A-list artists was a reality and the likes of Rihanna and Moby had their music jackedup! Privilege Ibiza alongside Tiësto and touring around the globe to demolish dance floors is just the beginning. Bassjackers are taking over!

Who is K-Theory

With the rise of electronic music there has been a steady increase of talented producers being brought to the spotlight introducing new styles of music into the scene. With a handful of DJ’s and producers all producing now in this competitive field, some have created projects strictly for genres such as dubstep, progressive, glitch-hop, electro, moombahton, trap & etc. Along with these producers, there’s another group as well, artists and bands that like to be different, the type of producers that hold no boundaries to their name and like to work at any bpm. One group that has proven to be able to work their style into genre or bpm is Bay Area’s own Dylan (23) and Dustin (28) aka K-Theory.

A duo that packs a set with genres from glitch-hop to electro-house, these two producers have made an impact on the current scene already performing alongside major headlining artists like Nero, Dada Life, Feed Me, & etc. Also with official remixes for major record labels like Ultra and Universal as well as OWSLA and Simplify Recordings. Dylan and Dustin of K-Theory have had a very promising career so far and continue to push their sound and style for their fans, recently creating a complete live act featuring keyboards, a vocalist, live mixing, and a drummer. Presenting themselves as true artists, K-Theory plans to keep on producing and performing everywhere they can and maybe even on the pyramids in Egypt one day.

With their busy schedules UndrgrndSound was able to get in-touch with Dylan from K-Theory and ask him a few questions, check it out!

Undrgrnd Sound: First off we’d like to thank you for taking the time to catch up with UndrgrndSound; we know you’re really busy.

K Theory: No problem! It’s our pleasure.

So let’s start off basic, when did you start producing and how did you get introduced into the field of music?

Well, Dustin started producing music when he was 16 and I started at 16 as well. We met up about 2 and half years ago and started this project together, and we’ve just been working ever since. I started off with a band before and he was producing obscure electronica as another project, we sort of just mashed our styles together and started our current project, K-Theory.

What made you start producing electronic music specifically?

Specifically electronic because when I first heard it, I fell in love, it was like the best music I was ever hearing. When I realized I could apply the same style of the band that I was in into electronic music, I just ran with it. I think the similar thing for Dustin as well. He started hearing it from an early age, so he just naturally gravitated towards electronic music.

What are your musical backgrounds?

I play keyboard and guitar, and he plays the same thing. He shreds on the keyboard so for our live shows he does all the key work, he can play classical melodies for like 5 minutes straight so that’s his thing.

So Dylan, this band you were in before, what kind of music did would you make?

It was like indie, alternative folky stuff, it’s kind of hard to name the style but it was mainly indie alternative with pop influences.

How did you get the name K-Theory?

Well, we’re both kind of nerds, and we like physics and mathematics, we took a lot of higher level classes in it so we took the name from the mathematical principal term K-Theory. In layman’s terms, it applies to many different fields. There are many different versions of math, and there are so many different levels of physics, so we thought what kind of music did we want to create, and we decided musical K-Theory. Bringing in a lot of different influences for our sound, so we kind of just chose that name because it made sense.

We know you produce a lot of different genres from glitch-hop to electro house and even break-beat, but what do you think is your favorite tempo or genre to produce?

We can do anything, so I guess that’s why our sound is so diverse. But right now, we’re really on the electronic hip-hop wave, which is our new sound for our new album and live show. We’ve worked non-stop, we’ve already written 16 songs for the album since the last week of January. We’ve just been just shredding in the studio, but definitely electronic hip-hop is popular genre for us right now.

How do it feels to be performing a complete K-Theory set, showcasing strictly your sound and style on stage?

It feels amazing! We’ve been doing it for almost a year now, so we have so much music now. We can do an original set for about 4 hours straight and just jam out. That’s huge for us; we’re pushing our sound with a band mentality. In our shows you won’t be hearing whatever the top tracks on beatport are, just all our original music.

So K-Theory is switching its live performances into a full on live show with a band. What’s the set up looking like for that?

We’re actually debuting that in San Francisco next week. It completely revolutionized everything for us and really changes the game. It’s our new album basically with a front man we have that’s on pretty much every single track. He’s a rapper/singer/lyricist all in one, we have Dustin who will be doing the keyboarding, a new drummer, and I’ll be doing live sampling using Reason and also mixing all of the tunes together.

We’re huge fans of K-Theory here at UndrgrndSound so we really support you for bringing on the element of a live act on stage. We actually saw you complaining about DJs performances at Ultra and what they’re portraying as the EDM scene on the stream to the world, what was that all about?

I was watching a Knife Party set and I was just like “What the fuck is this?” Literally, it was not the sound I expected them to play, and I was completely shocked. I thought they were going to play their sound, but it was just really poppy Miami bro-stuff and I was just like “Okay, where’s the Knife Party sound? I read this article where someone said “Do you think Davinci or Van Gough set up galleries for their own material and put other people’s material in their showcases?” and the answer is “No.”. They were pushing their own material; everyone should be pushing their own sound. That’s what we feel artists should be doing on that high caliber of a level in their music career, pushing their own sound. Why would you want to waste any moment of your performance on somebody else’s music unless you were doing a special cover. We just want people to be true to who they are and not be sold out by the big corporations. I love Nero’s album, absolutely love them as producers and I went to see them live and all they played was Skrillex and just top 40 dubstep tracks, and I was completely shocked. I’ve lost a lot of respect for them as artists, but when I see them next time I’ll let them know that’s how I felt.

Well here’s a fun question, if you two weren’t producers, what do you think your occupation would be today?

I was just talking to someone about this today actually! I actually have a super secret occupation, but I don’t want to talk about that in interviews…just kidding ha-ha. Well I wanted to be a doctor before being a producer so; I guess I’d have to say probably doctor. If Dustin wasn’t a producer he’d definitely be a chef, he loves to cook, and I make him cook for me all the time haha.

If you could collab with any EDM artist who would it be and why?

We’d love to collab with Skrillex for sure. We love his new song “The Reason”. He’s working on a new tempo and pushing awareness for new genres, and we’d love to collab with him for a 100 bpm tune to see what he can come up with because he’s really talented. Definitely Nero, I love their chord progressions and the whole cinematic feel they bring to dubstep. We’d also love to collaborate with Kill Paris.

If you could collab with any non-EDM artists who would it be?

Yes! For sure I’d love to get Lana Del Ray on a track, Juicy J, Asap Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, The Killers, Modest Mouse. If I could resurrect Bach, I’d love to do a track with him as well.

What would you be your dream venue to perform?

We’re playing Red Rocks soon so that’s definitely a dream come true, and Coachella would definitely be super dope, but definitely Red Rocks for sure. Maybe we could play the pyramids in Egypt as well!

What are your thoughts on the current electronic scene and where do you think it’s heading right now?

It’s kind of messed up right now because all the big corporations are trying to get into it. It’s really hard for kids to budget their time to go to all these shows and festivals and pay these kind of ticket prices, and a lot of artist fees are getting really inflated because the demand is so high. Other than that I know that there is a lot of new sounds being pushed out, a lot of new producers, and genres and it’s pretty damn good. Because of that it’s definitely going to be around for another 10-15 years so it definitely has a good future in that aspect. I think it’s going to cross over into the mainstream and it’s going to be a separation of people who can play live, and people who can’t play live. I don’t think the DJ hype is going to be as big in the future.

Do you have any advice for upcoming producers?

Yes definitely, work on your stuff and get honest feed back! Clock in those hours because if you have just your friends saying you have a sick track and it’s not well produced, it’s just not going to be good for you. It’s going to create expectations that don’t really exist, and you won’t be able to meet them. So find other producer that you can get honest feedback from and make sure they know what they’re talking about. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back from a label. Also remember to give out free music, because people love free music and music should be free.

Rune RK Makes a Splash from Copenhagen to Miami

One of the hottest DJs in Denmark, {Rune RK}, invaded Miami with his addictive dance music. He performed last March at the Hyde Lounge together with The Stafford Brothers & Friends, Leventina, and DJ EDX. Rune RK also made a splash at the Surfcomber Hotel in Miami the same month. Hearing the new tracks from Rune RK will definitely make anyone move their body and dance to the beat. His songs are perfect for all kinds of parties including poker parties. Verboten at Highline Ballroom

The crowd at Highline Ballroom was incredibly diverse this weekend; in fact, a local club goer confirmed that even legendary welsh DJ and record producer Sasha stopped by to enjoy some tunes. Verboten has taken the deep/tech house scene by the horns with having more and more appealing names brought to the table each weekend. Of course, this brings out new faces and sounds for the local New Yorkers that praise and appreciate underground.

Stadenco

The night began with Verboten’s very own resident Stadenco. Stadenco grew up taking many musical lessons. He continued his love for music and pursued an education at Berklee College Music in Boston, with a focus on production and engineering. Stadenco has shared the decks with the likes of Craig Richards, Loco Dice, Gui Boratto, Ida Engberg, Matthias Tanzmann, Tom Middleton, Stacey Pullen, Damian Lazarus, John Tejada, and Kevin Saunderson. He plays consistently at many of New York’s top parties and venues. Stadenco started off the night bringing in smooth and deep sounds to get the crowd’s blood flowing.

Eventually the crowd started to get bigger and the smell of sweaty B.O started to linger around everywhere, this can only mean one good thing, the people are dancing! Stadenco picked up the bass and showed some amazing transitioning. There’s nothing I love more than a DJ with amazing transitioning and amazing track selections.

James Teej

James Teej came on soon after. A 30 year old Canadian born electronic music artist, producer and DJ currently residing in Toronto, Canada. Be sure to check out all the awesome tracks James Teej and Sasha have together. They are truly amazing musicians when they collaborate. While James Teej continued to play, everyone awaited anxiously till 2:00 am for the nights headliner.

Maya Jane Coles

The young and beautifully talented, Maya Jane Coles is a music producer, audio engineer and DJ based in the United Kingdom, born in London of British and Japanese descent. Under her real name, she mostly composes and plays house music, while her alias Nocturnal Sunshine is dedicated to dubstep. You should definitely check her dub sounds out, here.

I was looking forward to seeing her spin for a second time because of how long overdue I was. The crowd was feeling every track Maya was playing. Everybody was screaming out her name of excitement, track after track. It’s actually amusing how much a small little female can bring to the table. I’m pretty sure she has inspired many more females who feel their gender will hold them back.

Ewan Pearson

The night started to came to an end and Ewan Pearson was up. Pearson is an English producer and DJ mainly known for his acid house, closed the night with extremely edgy sounds. Pearson has been in the game for as long as Maya Jane Coles has been alive! The dance floor began to empty and the best part about it was that there was more room to groove and get down with pals. I’m definitely looking forward to the talent Verboten is bringing in the near future.

As the warm weather is approaching the big apple, music lovers are getting ready for festival season, day parties and of course sun shining rooftop parties. And now we present you with yet another very special event to be excited for this summer: Hot Natured LIVE at Terminal Five on Saturday July 6, 2013.

But who exactly is Hot Natured you might ask? Well for those not informed, HN was founded in 2010 by deep house legend Jamie Jones. The HN family is made up of four members: Jamie himself, Lee Foss, Luca C, and Ali Love. You might have heard about the group during WMC this March when they hosted their Paradise Miami party at Ice Palace with many special guests including Richy Ahmed, Dyed Soundorom, Mark Jenkyns, Russ Yallop, Benoit & Sergio and many more. The party was definitely a night to remember as Lee Foss and Anabel Englund took the Miami deep house scene into their own hands and performed super catchy hits like “Reverse Skydiving” and “Electricity” live. Jamie Jones performed twice in a DJ set, as well as a live set where he dropped his infamous edit of Azarii & III’s “Hungry for the Power” as well as “Benediction” with Ali Love singing vocals. And of course how could we forget Infinity Ink’s Luca C and Ali Love performing tracks like “Infinity” and their popular WMC hit “Emperor” featuring Kali, which was heard all over Miami during the end of March. In addition to the beautiful flashing magenta lights, pleasantly warm Miami weather, and an abundance of Sex on the Beach cocktails, Hot Natured kept the party going until 10 am the next morning, with pleasing deep house vibes incomparable to any other party.

If you frequent attending Saturday night events at Webster Hall, your’e probably accustomed to Circus Saturdays, a marvelous style of party like no other in New York City that would feature an enticing line up of DJ’s along with Lyra performances, and pyro acts; emitting the theme of an elegant circus party. To keep things fresh and exciting, Webster Hall decided to retire this themed event and introduce a new party for our wonderful city, Brite Nites. You can already guess what the theme of the event might be from the name. It’s very appropriate considering we live in the city that never sleeps, a city that’s just filled with lights no matter day or night. As soon as you entered the famous grand ballroom, a large neon sign with the words “Brite Nites” flashes on stage. The dance floor is quickly filled up and New York City is ready to experience the new Brite Nites party at Webster Hall.

Taking to the stage for this premier party was a hard hitting electro-house roster of DJ/Producer’s from Wolfgang Gartner’s record label “Kindergarten Recordings”. DallasK was headlining New York City for the first time with opening act Popeska and closing act Charlie Darker. Popeska was first to set off the night, and had the crowd blast off into a trance of feet stomping electro-house. Popeska was actually the first artist to get signed to Wolfgang’s Kindergarten Recordings. Starting from humble beginnings as a dorm room producer to touring with Wolfgang Gartner himself, this young DJ/producer knew how to kick off a show with a rush of electro synths. Most of his songs in the beginning of the set kept to a 128 bpm flow, dropping massive electro-house tracks like Feed Me’s “Trichitillomania”. Using most introduction build ups to hype the crowd up with exhilaration and then switching tracks to a popular song just for the drop, Popeska knew how to work a crowd properly as a DJ with style and energy. He even worked a little bit of tech-house into his set to set off a groove, and played famous house tracks like Tujamo & Plastik Funk’s track “Who” , a track has had crowds jumping and amped for almost over a year now.

Popeska had you jumping & dancing to a lot of house, but then worked his bpm up to switch genres and drop some heavy dubstep for the crowd. Most electro-house fans accept a little bit of dubstep during a show considering they usually use the same synths or similar styles of synths, so the crowd at Webster absolutely loved the dubstep transition. Usually when I see an artist working around the 140 bpm area, I wonder if he’s going to drop some trap too, and what did you know? Trap was dropped! But keeping the crowd singing and ready for the trap drop, Popeska dropped Brillz’s remix to Zedd’s hit song “Clarity”. This remix has taken over the trap scene as well as being the perfect song for a crowd to sing and then transition into that trap groove that no other genre can capture, so I figured Popeska didn’t want to go into a complete trap section of a set but quickly go in and out as the crowd sings and that’s exactly what he did. It definitely was a proper and safe move as a DJ to play this song specifically to keep the crowd amped up with a different style as well as singing the vocals to the original that they’re used to, which is what DJ’ing is obviously all about, choosing the proper tracks for the right crowd at the right time. His set then phased back into the electro-house vibe, playing songs like Zedd’s “Fall into the Sky” & Kill The Noise’s “Saturn”.

Popeska’s set was the perfect set for an electro-house fan to experience their favorite genre as well as some subtle transitions of other genres that kept to the style and kept you dancing. A DJ that knew how to play his style of sound with a little variety of genre, Popeska definitely had Webster Hall rocking with him non-stop through his entire set. Ending his set with the element of energy was in my opinion a smart thing to do since the crowd was about to be hit with another hour of intense electro-house from DallasK, so might as well get them ready for it again with the outro.

As the clock struck 2 am, the night’s headliner DallasK was introduced to the stage. The last time DallasK played NYC, it was almost 2 years ago as the opening act for Wolfgang Gartner’s sold out show. It was an epic performance for a packed out house if you remember it. Ever since, NYC has waited for DallasK to comeback. Now as a headliner he started off his set with an intense selection of big-room house tracks. Big-room house packs reverb in the kicks that effects the venue in such a way that almost everyone can’t help but move to the song. The reverb seems so deep that the kicks give off a euphoric vibe like no other genre can. He then transitioned into a portion of electro-house, with growls of saw type synths that had you head banging as if it were metal show. Hitting the crowd with a little bit of electro-house, DallasK moved onto some dutch-house as well. The dutch-house party vibe hits almost every crowd, whether you like electro, tech, progressive, or complextro, a dutch-house track would make you dance.

With this vibe of the show being set off, Webster Hall introduced their theatrics for their themed event. Reminding you that this an exclusive show only at Webster Hall with special performances, the lights were dimmed low as two stunning dancers with a neon wired dresses were brought out to the stage. Equipped with a weapon in hand, these dancers were there to show you what ‘brite nites’ was all about. DallasK played the build-up of an intro as the crowd cheered waiting for the drop, and as the screams of the crowd blended with the up-rise of the build-up, a drop was brought with the dancers blasting smoke guns into the crowd. Unleashing the smoke, the crowd crowd was given a cinematic feel, a rush as if you were blasted into a roller coaster of dance music. Another act they brought onto the stage later on in the show was to show you why the event has the word “brite” in it. A pyro act was performed on stage with two performers, similar but a bit different from Circus Saturday’s pyro acts. Circus Saturday’s pyro act usually were fire hoopers, this time for ‘brite nites’ they had fire poi, which is a different style. Might be a little technical, but to those of you know that know these styles you know how different both are. Everyone was vibin’ with the fun and talented acts on stage combined with an amazing selection of songs from DallasK.

The set included some similarities with Popeska’s set but still different. Trap was dropped but not the Clarity remix by Brillz, along with some dubstep songs as well, giving his set a variety. A highlight of his set with songs vocal wise that had the crowd really singing was definitely the electro-house mash-up of Nero’s “Guilt”, along with The Killer’s mash-up of “Somebody Told Me. A highlight of his set to me was dropping electro-house famous producer’s Torro Torro’s remix of Congorock “Bless Di Nation”, a track that is supported by a huge cast of big named DJ’s around the world. Along with Torro Torro’s song, DallasK dropped Chuckie’s newest remix for “Aviation High”. I didn’t expect to hear this song so soon in someone’s set, but this song had the crowd pumped so quick, it was great to see such a new track get such great feedback right away. Ending his set with a bang like Aviation High, Charlie Darker took the stage closing off Webster Hall with a set full of electro-house as well, giving you a night full of intensity and theatric acts on stage that brought an elegant theme to the show.

I’ve never heard so much electro-house at once, but never have been so satisfied with it because it was played out so well from DJ to DJ and transition to transition. When you felt it was too much, they switched to a quick other genre to give you a break, and then bring it right back when it was ready. My hats off to Webster Hall’s premiere event, this was definitely a new night of parties that New York City isn’t ready for, but will be astonished every week with a line-up of major DJ’s that I can’t wait to keep seeing.

Electric Zoo Phase 1 Line-up: Thoughts and Speculations!

The Phase 1 lineup for Electric Zoo Festival has been announced. That’s not all — it was accompanied by a Policy Change e-mail. This email says that effective immediately the festival will be adopting an “18 and over” policy for festival attendees. Full refunds are offered for any underage ticket holders who will not have a birthday before Labor Day Weekend when the festival takes place.

AGE POLICY CHANGE

In previous years Electric Zoo has been all ages, which has been a great opportunity for those who cannot see their favorite artists in clubs to check out multiple DJ sets over the weekend. However, the older crowd has it’s gripes with this and I’m sure this is a positive for many people.

The lineup itself currently displays the lineup for the MAIN STAGE, both East and West. It does NOT display any acts on the Sunday School Hilltop, known for techno acts. It does NOT display the Red Bull Tent, or any other of the several tents all the Zoo animals know. So given this fact and the fact that the festival is now 18+, the older crowd should be pretty excited. Virtually every act that has a level of mainstream popularity is on one of these stages. That means the side stages will probably contain more obscure artists who are not able to come to New York as often, and the possibility that tents may be taken over by groups such as how it is done at Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival. We may see a Carl Cox & Friends Tent, or an Afrojack “JACKED” Tent, etc. This is not unfounded since Above & Beyond did have a Group Therapy tent at last year’s Electric Zoo Festival, and Fool’s Gold took over an arena as well. Who actually does this is up for dispute, but there is slightly more room for it than last year without losing any of the other artists — again, because there are 2 main stages housing them now.

All of that taken care of, let’s talk about the actual Mainstage Lineup!

THE LINEUP

The Mainstage itself is split into two sides and contains a large array of different artists — which is in itself a big accomplishment. If you were at Electric Zoo last year you know that the experience was more varied, because Electric Daisy Carnival came to New York for the first time. Due to contract obligations, many artists had to choose between playing one festival or the other. So to have artists like David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, and Tiesto despite this is a massive achievement on Made Event’s part. They have done a great job at putting together a lineup that contains almost every big hitter — and the ones who are absent may clue you in to potential EDC headliners!)

What you will notice upon further inspection is the structure of each stage allows you to have a different experience during the set times. The way the names are displayed it suggests the corresponding artists on the other side will play at the same time — for example, Armin van Buuren will likely play his Trance set with Euphoric sounds. At the same time Steve Aoki will throw down some dirty Electro House and pile on the cakes. There are many parallels here where the artists have distinctly different music. This allows festival goers to enjoy the main stage experience but have a preference as well. This added element of choice adds some excitement considering you also have the other stages to choose from.

With another five months before the festival, this is a very solid start for Electric Zoo. A big challenge in festivals is to be able to have something for everyone, and the Phase 1 lineup brings a lot of opportunity as well as excitement.

“Electric Zoo 2013 is sure to be a great show and its celebrating its 5th year. I am quite curious to see how they will setup the 2 main stages as in the past it was only one.

As for the Artists, I am looking forward to being put in a State of Trance by Armin, getting Trashed with Tommy Trash and Flux Pavillion as always; but also Above & Beyond, because they killed it last year. Krewella is also interesting to see on the main stage and will leave me conflicted if they are playing the same time as Tommy Trash, but their success brought them from one of the smaller tents last year to the main stage. Bassnectar, hopefully he will get a decent set-time unlike in Miami.

As for future artists, I really hope that they manage to get Seven Lions, Excision, Doctor P to compliment Flux Pavillion, Dillon Francis and lastly Pretty Lights. Phase 2 should be interesting!”

“Electric Zoo has been committed to it’s animals for the last five years, this year with the announcement of the 18+ rule I am rejoicing! The festival experience with clear age limits is always a game changer. That being said, there are way more exciting things than the age change up!

Ever since I first heard electronic music I have looked forward to Labor Day weekend on Randall’s Island in New York City for a weekend of quality music with the ever growing fan base. The music has always been absolutely incredible especially because there is really a place for everyone. I rarely find myself sticking to one tent as I have an assorted taste in music and the variety of artists are all over. Running around tent to tent, sweating my entire life out (thank you free water refill stations), eating dumplings from RickShaw and being with a few thousand like-minded animals is what I look forward to each year!

If last weekend wasn’t enough dubstep & trap for you get ready for this upcoming Friday at Webster Hall. Girls & Boys events is bringing you a cast of hard hitting dubstep and trap artists. Coming to the stage headlining on the bill will be San Francisco’s own Antiserum along with Helicopter Showdown and Clicks & Whistles.

Antiserum

Antiserum continuously defines the sound of today. Spawned in a laboratory of collaborations with heavy hitters such as LA dubplate warrior 12th Planet, he has found himself continuously at the forefront of bass music’s list key players. His releases on Smog Records and Caspa’s Dub Police label have established him as a mainstay of sub-heavy music.

Antiserum’s ability to inoculate should come as no surprise. His production “Brick Squad Anthem,” collaboration with Atlanta-based music producer Mayhem, has received huge support from the bass community including Skrillex, Diplo, Datsik, and Flux Pavillion. His collaboration with 12th Planet on the Smog City Compilation, “Bass Salt” was featured on Rolling Stone and UKF and his remix of Helicopter Showdown’s “Can You Feel Me” reached #2 on the beatport dubstep charts.

Antiserums BBC Radio 1xtra mix is a brief glance into the dynamic nature of his performance, during which he defies expectations of the listener and delivers an injection of what can only be described as the “Antiserum.” Upcoming collaborations with 12th Planet, Mayhem, Brillz, and a release on Datsik’s Firepower label will likely dub him the patron saint of bass in 2013.

Post Game: STS9′s Live Perfomance at Roseland Ballroom 4.20

On a day where most people would probably be staying in and hanging with their buddies, Roseland Ballroom brought the legendary electronic/rock band STS9 aka Sound Tribe Sector 9 to their stage. Since it was a sold out event, all I could expect was greatness and quality entertainment. I had not listened to their music before I attended the show but, I had heard many great things about them. As such, I was well aware that this was something that I should add to (and cross off) my ever-growing list of must-see artists.

STS9 (@sts9) has been around since 1998, when they established themselves in Atlanta, GA. Over the past decade they have released a total of 11 albums, the most recent being When the Dust Settles, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Electronic Charts in 2011. Their self-owned record label, 1320 Records features music from a plethora of artists including Big Gigantic, Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob. STS9 draws their influence from rock, EDM, funk, jazz and hip hop, which was all very evident throughout the show. One fact that I found very fascinating is that they have partnered up with numerous non-profit organizations throughout their career. Their most notable achievement is that they raised $150,000 for The Make it Right Foundation in order to help with Hurricane Katrina relief. STS9’s selfless acts of charity, made me even more excited to see them.

Even though STS9’s music can be considered calm, groovy and almost relaxing, Roseland was in absolute chaos when I first walked in I felt like I was in an oxymoron. The crowd was also very diverse, I saw ravers (including someone spinning poi), older folks and young people but, the majority consisted of friendly hippies who were anxious to groove out. With the first strum of the guitar, I immediately remembered how much I love rock concerts and the use of live instruments, especially percussion. The use of chimes, congas and cowbells were all perfect accents to strong presence of the wah-pedal and synths. The light setup and use of LED screens were a visual reminder of the psychedelic elements of their music. STS9 can be easily compared with EOTO and Lotus but, what set them apart for me are the heavy hip-hop tones in a number of their tracks.

One highlight was when they incorporated a brass trio during the middle of the show- it made me think of Big Gigantic and how jazz and EDM can come together so harmoniously. They even showed their appreciation of NYC when a crowded subway train played across their screens. It was very pleasant and well-received but, the best thing they did that evening was project a Google Earth image of the world that quickly zoomed in to reveal Roseland Ballroom. This finale was a statement of unity that really touched me and also made me think “whoa, who thinks to do that? NO ONE! Only STS9.”

Everything from the visuals, to the use of a brass trio made April 20, 2013 one of the most interesting and funkadelic nights of my life. I’m looking forward to seeing them at Camp Bisco in July. They will also be at Summer Camp Festival, Wakarusa, Moonrise, Jambase and All Good. STS9’s combination of standard rock instruments such as the bass and electric guitar with “electronic instruments”- the synthesizer and keyboards, brought the best of both worlds that culminated into one of the most complex and spectacular shows I have ever seen. A Night at Sullivan Room: PROPAGANDA! its good for you!

Sullivan Room, one of New York’s most legendary clubs, opened its doors once again this Saturday for its Propaganda! party. Known worldwide as an underground haven, Sullivan Room brought together a collection of DJ’s both foreign and local to entertain the house-heads on a weekend when the warm weather seemed to have finally settled in here in NYC. Albania’s Sabb headlined the evening, with support from Sullivan Room boss SR Serge aka Grass Is Greener, NYC’s duo Samsara, Cylo, and QueenVC.

As most regulars of NY’s underground scene already know, there’s something special about the vibe at Sullivan Room. It’s all about the music at this venue, and if that’s your thing, this week’s Propaganda! party did not disappoint. Saturday’s audio fix included doses of house, deep house, tech house, and even support from a live saxophone.

The crowd had a great vibe from beginning to end. The dance floor wasn’t jam-packed, but that’s the beauty about nights like this. Just enough room for everybody to dance, and just the kind of beats to get everybody’s feet moving.

NYC’s duo Samsara, made up of brothers Corey and Ryan Negrin, really got the party going in the middle of the night. Moving smoothly from genre to genre, the pair offered up an eclectic mix for the audience’s listening pleasure. From funky house, to deep grooves, to drum-infused tech house, haunting vocals, and the aforementioned saxophone performance (one of my favorite elements of the night), Samsara displayed a special kind of versatility.

As the party peaked, guest of honor Sabb took over the decks, diving straight into a tech house set that boosted the energy in the room even further. Driving bass lines set the pace, and a healthy dose of drums seemed to make your feet get lighter beneath you. With effective build-ups, satisfying drops, and smooth mixing, Sabb had full command of the crowd. By 3AM, the dance floor was in a full sweat with hands in the air. And let’s be honest, at 3AM in NYC, that’s exactly the way it should be. Highlight tracks included Subb-an’s remix of Noir & Haze’s “Around” and fan favorite “Grindhouse” by Dubfire.

With the most dedicated party-goers still occupying the floor, Serge provided an effective close to the latest installment of the Propaganda! party. By now you have probably figured out that I walked out of Sullivan Room on Sunday morning fully satisfied. Sure my legs were sore and the echoes of the basslines thumped in my head on the trip back home, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Overall, a great mix of artists here, a unique experience, and a great crowd to top it off. Another quality SR party without a doubt.

Girls & Boys events on Friday nights at Webster Hall has seen a lot of big named artists from genres of Dubstep, House, Techno, Electro, & Trap, but an event for a genre that has not taken the venue in a period of time was glitch-hop. Those who know Webster Hall know that this venue discriminates against no genre for their main ball room, so on April 5th the main stage was blessed with 21 year old DJ and producer Grant Kwiecinski, better known around the world as GRiZ along with supporting act Manic Focus.

With word that tickets sold out in the last few hours before the show, this event was even more highly anticipated before it began. For those of you know that know or have been following GRiZ for a while, you knew that this was the first time he was to headline his own show in New York City. He has stopped by NYC a few times to perform, but usually as a supporting act. So with fans of GRiZ and Manic Focus excited to finally see hear some electro-soul with heavy glitch-hop bass lines, the Webster Hall dance floor quickly filled in as soon as doors opened and there was a packed out dance floor by the time the first opening DJ’s were on.

To kick off the night and get the crowd pumped and ready to dance, Webster Hall’s resident DJ’s Alex English & DJ Subset were the first to hit the decks with a back to back set. Their set started with a lot of tech-house and house songs and almost instantly the crowd was already dancing and the usual Friday night’s Girls & Boys party began. Although the song selections weren’t really what the crowd was about to spend the night hearing, the fans didn’t objectify and danced till the heavy sound design took the stage.

Manic Focus took to the stage right after Alex English & Subset as the opening act for GRiZ. John “JmaC” McCarten aka Manic Focus is classically-trained on piano at an early age, his musical talents have brought him through the realms of hip-hop beats and electronic music, having now evolved into the dynamic, bass-induced sounds of Manic Focus. I wasn’t a huge fan of Manic Focus since I never really heard a lot of his songs, but after watching him live, I can definitely consider myself a fan now. In my opinion to perform a live show with amplifying energy earns a lot of points in my book because I’ve seen a handful of bad DJ’s and acts on stage that don’t know how to bring the energy on stage. Manic Focus started off his set very slow, with an electronic hip-hop vibe, dropping songs with major builds up to anticipate the crowd for the heavy bass drops. I’ve seen this done with a lot of house & dubstep dj’s and usually after the drop you’d see a lot of people waving their hands back and forth and jumping up and down, but with this glitch-hop element the drops effect to the crowd was totally different. People didn’t just wave their hands and jump, they actually danced. From side to side, back and forth, grooving and snapping their fingers to the electro-soul, something I don’t usually see at electronic shows, something I feel like electronic DANCE music has forgotten, to actually dance. Manic Focus smiled through the entire set watching the crowd having the time of their lives and he looked as if he was as well. The transitions from song to song were always smooth and never caught anyone off guard, whether it was a hip-hop influenced song or a song with dubstep synths made to make you go out of control, performance and energy wise there was no complain for his set. He played strictly Manic Focus songs; his tracks ranged from his most recent stuff like his “Mountain” remix for Elliot Lipp as well as songs that released a few months ago like “We Won’t Land”. Overall, Manic Focus was the perfect opening act for GRiZ and definitely had the crowd amped up and energized for the upcoming main act of the night.

Time came for Grant Kwiecinski aka GRiZ to take the stage for a crowd waiting a long time to see him finally headline in NYC. Once the venue saw him come onto stage with his prized saxophone, all of Webster Hall cheered for him. The energy and vibe that just came off him from entering with his instrument had the crowd already going crazy, but Webster Hall had no idea what kind of set they were in for tonight. He started his set with his brand new free song that actually released the day of this show called “Gettin’ Live”. The song featured a vocal sample of Tupac that transitioned into a jazzy soul introduction with very subtle electro-bass in the background. The introduction resembled 70’s soul and jazz with a fusion of 2013’s electronic music. Perfect selection for an introduction with trumpets roaring and making his first time headlining New York City seem cinematic. As soon as the song transitioned slowly into the glitch-hop drop of the song, fans all over the venue danced, raged, and jumped up and down from the dance floor to even people jumping on top of the speakers to dance. One song that I was really happy to hear was his collaboration track with Big Gigantic called “Power”. This song focuses mainly on a heavy dubstep style for the drops, but the break downs are filled with beautiful saxophone melodies. Both GRiZ and Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic are saxophone players, so to hear the melodies formed from two of my favorite glitch-hop/dubstep artists was epic. While the dubstep dropped most fans just raged, but as soon as those breakdowns came, GRiZ showed NYC why he is the artist that he is today on tour non-stop. He played those saxophone breakdowns with such passion and soul, the crowd couldn’t help but stop and embrace the talent of this young producer.

Another song that definitely had the venue hyped and made me very happy to hear was a song from GRiZ’s sideproject with another glitch-hop heavyweight Gramatik called “Grizmatik”. Although the duo has only released one song called “Digital Liberation Is Mad Freedom”, this song has had both GRiZ and Gramatik fans very excited for a few months anticipating what may come next from the two artists. The energy that this song captured kept to the elements of GRiZ’s entire set, keeping to a jazz introduction layered with soulful guitar chords and intense hip-hop kicks & snares. But this song was a bit different from most of their stuff, it kept to the same intro as most of their songs do, and transitioned into glitch-hop with a lot of sound design and synths that no one ever heard before, but the last drop of the song was the part to set off the crowd into madness. The song transitions into dubstep for the last part of the song, but a style of dubstep that strictly kept to the elements of GRiZ and Gramatik. Still keeping the feeling of rage, but with funky guitar chords in the background and slight James Brown vocal samples that cut in and out. So tell me when was the last time you raged and heard James Brown samples coming in and out? Probably never, and that is why GRiZ’s style as an artist varies from the regular electronic artist.

Griz played a lot of his old tracks like “iLL Type Moves” but also played a lot of his recent songs from his EP “Mad Liberation”. All in all, GRiZ kept the crowd rocking non-stop. From the intense dubstep influenced synths, to the soulful melodies of his saxophone. Whether you were fist pumping or dancing non-stop, you had to admit this was a show to not forget. To see electronic music collaborating with actual instrumentation like a saxophone gives fans of electronic dance music hope for the future of music. Although it’s always nice to see a good DJ, it’s always an eventful experience to watch someone actually play an instrument on stage, especially in this day and age with everything being about pushing buttons it feels almost rare.

Fans eagerly wait to see what’s next for GRiZ and they await his upcoming album with Gramatik for the “Grizmatik” album, but for now New York City was left satisfied and filled with melodic bass. A night that fans of GRiZ waited a long time for and it finally had to come to an end. Overall this night’s show at Webster Hall was completely different from every show I’ve been to at Webster Hall since they haven’t had a glitch-hop artist in a while, but it was an amazing experience and I’m sure fans would agree as they cheered for GRiZ to come back for an encore. The usual crowd on a Friday Night at Webster that weren’t fans of GRiZ were showcased a different style of music that they may not be used to, but every person in the venue accepted this style with open arms.

DJ Shadow at Output NYC 4/11

Faulty DL opened playing a mélange ranging from aphex-esque break beats to ambient techno ala Pantha Du Prince. The crowd was warming. What type of crowd was this? A house full of ravers? Maybe some artsy folk from SF? The crowd is too white to be from the world of hip hop. When Shadow stepped up on stage he prefaced it that he would be playing new stuff. I imagined that he keeps a portion of his record collection on the bus and rips records daily to a flash drive. There was a huge bus parked across the street from the door. Another preface to his set was that there is no laptop up on stage. Shadow has evolved with the world of DJs. His first release set the ground for what sampling is. Before him Paul’s boutique broke new ground and made new law on copyright by yanking hundreds of samples from other records. Entroducing(1996) took this to a new level by creating an entire album made from samples.

Shadow boasted that he knew we were an open crowd. He played a wide variety. The only tune I recognized with Organ Donor from his first album. Nevertheless, I heard exactly what I wanted to hear. I had not been to a shadow show before but I have read the critiques. All the fans just want to hear Entroducing. Since he had had a steady career either releasing a new album or working with someone on a tour, he’s been putting in work. The show Shadow put on was the essence of a DJ as anyone should expect. New music, fresher than fresh, laid out in a way format that makes you want to lay your booty flat on the ground.

Output is new; they are figuring some things out and doing other things well. The staff is numerous and helpful. I’d fear showing up too early and the crowd being smaller than the staff standing around to aid. The setup looks very static. A huge faux woofer lined with LEDs at the front of the dance floor blasting the crowd with bass and light. In the back the floor is raised and seats line the wall. Stairs lead up to a balcony open to the floor below with a second bar and restroom access. Lights behind the stage and on the upper floor provide most of the color. The music should keep the place fresh as the atmosphere isn’t going to change as time does. Much of the crowd choosing to avoid the dance floor chose to grab a section of railing on the upper floor and lean to the music. Paired with cans of beer and cocktails priced exorbitantly, the crowd might take a while to warm up. Come prepared or ready to drop down a Grant as credit cards are not accepted. This place is catering to the changing Williamsburg.

This Friday at Girls & Boys events at Webster Hall will be keeping its stage very versatile with a big line up as usual. Back for his 3rd time playing in New York City, OWSLA record’s own Alvin Risk will be coming through with the heavy dubstep along with drum & bass/techno DJ & producer Photek & Trap DJ/producer Luminox.

Singer and producer Alvin Risk’s talents have earned him instant recognition amongst the dance music Illuminati. Since posting his first songs just months ago, he has already garnered support from artists like Skrillex, Designer Drugs, and Steve Aoki, even featuring in Pendulum’s BBC Radio One Essential Mix. Now placed at the forefront of electronic music, his catalog continues to grow steadily with a host of original productions and collaborations as well as remixes for artists as diverse as Matt & Kim, Ali Love, and Jamaica. He has also recently released the highly anticipated ‘Infinity’ EP on Dim Mak Records.

Also playing will be Rupert Parkes aka Photek, a Los Angeles-based British record producer and DJ. He joined the drum and bass scene relatively early (his first release was in 1992, a collaboration with Rob Solomon a.k.a. Lexis), and is still one of its most respected players. In the mid-to-late Nineties he was a very active remixer, and he has also done some soundtrack work, most notably for The Animatrix. His most recent album is ‘KU:PALM’ released on his own record label Photek Productions.

In just a few months’ time, Luminox’s adrenaline-fueled club hip-hop sound has earned him thousands of fans all over the world, as well as recognition amongst some of dance music’s most elite producers and DJ’s. His remixes and originals have rocked festivals and set the standard for everyone attempting to fuse EDM and hip-hop together. Luminox’s live set is packed with shock value and is sure to keep crowds bouncing. This young, versatile producer has no intentions of slowing down and will continue to challenge and defy musical expectations.

This past weekend I got the opportunity to dance with New York’s very own Verboten: presenting Joris Voorn, Davide Squillace, and Trente Cantrelle. Walking into Highline Ballroom at half past 12, I was pumped and ready to dance.

Verboten, known for bringing the biggest names in underground dance music to the Big Apple, always makes sure they have a quality line up filled with an abundance of talent and energy. This week Joris Voorn was the headliner, with Italy’s very own Davide Squillace, and LA based producer Trente Cantrelle to keep the crowd going until closing time.

Trente Cantrelle known for the production of, “I Want A Freak” released in 2012, started the night off with a rather house-y yet deep set. He dropped “Another Time” by Ben Anders released on Off Recordings in addition to a few other mellow vocal infused dance hits. Cantrelle proved to be a great opener, with plenty of awesome transitioning skills.

At quarter to one, the dance floor started getting more packed as the eager crowd awaited Davide Squillace’s return to NYC. He started off his set with a warm bass line, and then blended what sounded like cheering crowds and cymbals with bass as a way of pumping up his crowd for his anticipated return. Squillace dropped Tale of Us’ “Another Earth” which was a WMC favorite this year, as well as “A Better Light” Martinez Brothers Remix by Santos Resiak. He closed his set with a booming deep bass line and lots of instruments.

After Voorn’s impressive b2b set with Nic Fanciulli in Miami quickly became a WMC favorite, Verboten was ready to take on the Netherlands native for themselves, and the rest of NYC. He came on set at 3 with a clapping tech-house track which he then slowly transitioned into a beautiful deep spanish guitar track. He dropped a variation of hits including his own “Spank the Maid”, Cuartero’s “Coco”, Analog People In A Digital World’s “Rose Rouge Vocal Edit” as well as Seth Troxler’s new track “Time” with Subb-an and Tom Trago. He even played an edit to Plastikman’s “Spastik” which really got the crowd stomping around the dance floor, proving he did not leave his spark in Miami after all. Listeners agreed this this was not the typical Voorn we were use to. Jolaze Hernandez, a fellow New Yorker observed, “I was surprised. I didn’t think he would spin as good as he did tonight. I’ve seen him on four separate occasions, and this time he was a lot more experimental. He definitely changed since I had last seen him two years ago.”

Joris already has departed NYC but you can keep his beats fresh in your mind ! Enjoy!

Overall the night was filled with plenty of dancing, beautiful vocals, and a reverberating bass, I could still hear! Join us again next week for Britain’s very own Maya Jane Coles, Ewan Pearson, and James Teej at Highline Ballroom for another special night to remember.

Post Game: NetSky Live @Webster Hall 4/12

For starters, this show was unlike any other electronic show that I had been to because it was more then just simply button mashing. It had live instruments, which was executed perfectly really bringing home the heart and soul of what Drum & Bass really is!

Lets get into it, The crowd as I have tend to noticed for NetSky is a very loyal, passionate crowd that knows his music but also embraces it. It is not your run of the mill fan, but rather a very deep loyal fanbase that is refreshing to see. The Venue, Webster Hall, as always was a great place for it and did an amazing job setting up NetSky and Co. perfectly! The Drummer (Which is very hard to drum for this genre) was spot on, the MC was great at his role, and the instruments sounded exactly how they should be. The last time I saw him was at Electronic Zoo which was an awesome show, but this performance at Webster was on some next level stuff because of the venue but moreso the live instruments!

As for the music, it was much of his known stuff such as Come Alive among others, but it featured many more new tracks that I felt acted as a reward for the loyal fanbase that was their. His new stuff was phenominal and I cannot wait to see it delievered to CD and released online. It is more advanced, has shades of Dubstep but maintains the Drum & Bass core we all were there to see. I am definitely excited to see when he does release the new material that he was so kindly able to embrace us with. He ended the show with the classic on an encore call “Every Day”, his remix of the well-known Rusko Track!

All and all, It was a great performance, especially in New York City. I can’t wait to see him again this upcoming summer and hope you guys all will check him out if you haven’t already! He is truly the sound of the underground.

Post -Game: Xilent @ BASSment Saturdays Webster Hall 4/13

Continuing with their streak of underground but quickly rising artists, the BASSment at Webster Hall brought Xilent (@Xilent) to tear the house down. Xilent aka Eryk Kowalczyk began his relationship with music at a very young age. He is currently signed with AudioPorn Records and has since released 4 EPs and his chart topping single Boss Wave. I was most looking forward to hearing songs from his most recent EP, Touch Sound, which maintains the trance-infused beats that are comparable to OWSLA’s Seven Lions.

Once I entered The Studio I was immediately immersed in an environment that reeked of the “underground rave;” hot, sweaty dancers, LEDs everywhere, simple lasers cutting through the fog, kandi trades, neon clothing and even one hula hooper. This was clearly the place to be tonight. The opener was a B2B set featuring Subset (@subsetgetsit) and Heffay. Subset has been the resident DJ of BASSment Saturdays since 2011 and has never disappointed his eclectic and accepting audience. None of his sets are ever the same but, he always focuses on bringing heavy-hitting tracks that range from dubstep to booty house. Considering I have never seen a B2B set, the best way I can describe it is “the greatest tag team of floor-shattering bass I’ve seen at Webster” and I cannot wait for the next! The transitions from one DJ to the next were so smooth, it felt like they were one entity- I would not be surprised if they became a duo in the near future. Overall, it was very clear that the BASSment is Subset’s domain because he managed to get everyone pumped and kept us raging through his entire set. I recommend checking out Subset and Heffay’s collaboration, “Rasputin”, since it captures how they set the tone for the rest of the night.

The last time Xilent was at Webster was August 2012 for Trolley Snatcha’s US Summer Tour, which also featured Seven Lions. That being said, as soon as Xilent approached the tables, everyone’s ears perked up with anticipation. Dressed in a similar outfit as seen in his music video for Boss Wave, with the addition of a GoPro camera, I was expecting this to be an unforgettable show. He began the night with my favorite song, “Touch Sound,” needless to say the crowd was immediately amped and ready for what was to come. The beginning of his set consisted of his well-known trance-y dubstep songs along with harder forms of the genre. The variance from hard to soft gave the audience ample opportunities to settle down and rev back up. As such it was difficult to know what to expect from one song to the next- which is a good thing of course! Toward the middle, he played a number of Seven Lions’ songs, including a few off the self-titled EP. It seemed as though he was paying homage to their August show as well as, a brief request for a collaboration via Facebook a few months ago. As soon as he played his “classic” track, “Choose Me” his die-hard fans (most of the crowd) went wild. I had never heard the song and I definitely enjoyed the smoothness and similarity to “Touch Sound.” The most unexpected parts of the night were when he dropped both of Skrillex’s “Goin’ Down” and “Goin’ Hard” mixes of Birdy Nam Nam’s “Goin’ In.” It served as the one of more interesting highlights of his set.

To bring the late night to a close, Xilent brought his UK vibes for all to hear with an excellent selection of Drum and Bass. It was almost like a temporally disconnected continuation of Netsky’s performance from the previous night. I had not heard DnB for awhile so, that small chunk was a refresher; I thoroughly enjoyed the sick remix of Krewella’s “Killin’ It.” The final track was of course “Boss Wave” which was met with cheering and dancing that matched the chiptunes/video game-esque quality of the song. Xilent’s set was very comprehensive and kept the crowd wanting more. He knew how to keep us on our toes and kept us wondering what he would drop next. I look forward to more shows especially, the ones that feature him as a headliner- he is a quickly rising name in the dubstep genre so, keep your eyes peeled because he should NOT be missed.

2013 has continued this relentless strive forward, intense studio time balanced with further dates in Europe and North America alongside a double header of UK shows including a debut at the world famous Cream in Liverpool and Digital in Newcastle. The summer promises much more as well, with high profile sets at festivals, further continental exploration and the return to dance music’s original Mecca; Ibiza. They represent just the tip of the iceberg for Tim, 12 months primed to be his most fruitful and promising to date.

Get Freaking Pumped

Since 1992 Starscape has been gracing the underground music fans with massive one day events. In it’s newly christened Moonrise is onto the next thing after moving from Armistead Park to Downtown Baltimore, is now a two day festival. Moonrise has a stacked lineup to perform over two days rather than a singular night on June 8-9.

Steez Promo didn’t hold back this year. The Baltimore-based company already dropped the lineup 3 months early, while other festivals continue to hold back their own line-up announcements. With Phase 1 this gigantic we know “Phase 2 is going to be absolutely huge“.

Moonrise has a little bit, or a lot a bit for everybody to get down on. Not everyone is at a show for the same thing; thats why festivals rock so freaking hard, because the unique tastes in music everyone has. This festival will have “live dubstep” for Destroid’s second show ever and GZA (Wu Tang Clan) for the old school hip hop fans. Live music is incredible and perhaps sometimes overlooked in the electronic world; Steez is bringing in the live sound and for that we salute you Moonrise. Infected Mushroom some Crystal Method and of course we will find out more on April 16.

Lets start of this weekend with a fine selection of downloadable tracks. First is a very bouncy and juicy track by Deorro called “Queef” :-x. Daft Punk Preview “Get Lucky” At Coachella

Festival goers at Cochella have gotten an early taste of Daft Punk’s newest album Random Access Memories. A projected video played Get Lucky to the crowd. The preview featured Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, along side Daft Punk.

WMC 2013: DiskoLabs presents – No Sugar Added at Nikki Beach Day 1

After last years incredible experience: a two day party otherwise known as ‘No Sugar Added’ at Nikki Beach during the Miami Winter Music Conference, it was more than obvious that Undrgrnd Sound needed to return.

Miami’s WMC – celebrating its 28th consecutive year in 2013 – is one of the most publicized annual music gatherings in the world. An incredible platform for the advancement of the industry, WMC attracts thousands of artists and music industry delegates from 70 countries and over 100,000 event attendees each year for more than 500 events, parties, seminars and workshop… of course we showed up.

This year proved to be the biggest ‘No Sugar Added’ yet. Fear not! If you did not follow our twitter and instagram updates don’t sweat, we have the event review right here for you.

Arrival

Friday March 22 at Nikki Beach proved to be an 11 hour marathon of music for the Undrgrnd Sound team. Upon arrival our ears were greeted by Marco Corola going strong during a 6 hour set at the Beach Stage. Promptly, a pitcher of Mojito was downed along with some delicious jerked chicken and rice. The chicken was freaking awesome. Kudos to you BBQ team in the back!

The Crowd

Many people had been at the party for a few hours lounging around in the comfortable chairs, couches and bed-things meant for the bottle service crowd. The crowd was a mix of beautiful Miami sun-kissed patrons and those who were still recovering and had just flown in for WMC. There was a few confused business men who perhaps didn’t realize that this was a planned event but overall everyone there knew what was in store . Maybe not so shocking, some of the craziest people at the venue were some scattered groups of New Yorkers. . .

The crowd was easily able to move from the beach stage to the downstairs stage where there was more of a bamboo and bass vibe to the upstairs stage, where Defected In The House had Undrgrnd Sound dancing until the lights turned on at 5 am.

Defected In The House

This label really holds true to the roots of House music. Defected In The House hasn’t hosted a No Sugar Added event since 2010 and we can certainly wish for another return after the quality of music presented to Miami’s party goers this past friday.

The guests were able to score a free compilation of the record company’s music along with some key chains that were stolen immediately, aka one person walks away with about 10!

Dennis Ferrer, Reboot, Noir, Yousef, Pirupa, Dusky, Supernova, MK, Franky Rizado and Sonny Fodera along with others played from noon till 5 am. The line-up boasted an impressive mix showcasing the underground music with which the Defected brand has built their name with.

Dennis Ferrer and Noir recently played at sell-out NYE show at Electric Brixton. Reboot, Pirupa and Supernova are also A-List DJ’s with whom Defected has worked with for a while. Dusky, Yousef and Sonny Fodera are relative newcomers to the Defected ranks. According to Defected Records there will be releases and remixes due out from all three sets of producers.

Although added to the show at a later time, it was hardly an after thought of sound. MK In The House is due for release on Defected soon, MK played back to back with Noir at NSA. While Franky Rizardo played with Sonny Fodera.

Why choose NSA?

We think it is important that Undrgrnd Sound spreads the word on why we choose particular parties. No Sugar Added is a 16 hour party with everything a person could possibly need for the day: sunshine, warm sand, comfy lounge chairs, drinks, food and most importantly great music. Once you enter the party, you are unable to leave. While that may sound daunting, once you arrive it is obvious that there is no reason to leave at all. Plus there is plenty of bathroom space so fear not!

It is important to note the people we worked with from No Sugar Added were extremely accommodating. For those who do not realize, the chaos that is behind the scenes in throwing an amazing event is maddening. The staff was never rude despite having to run all over the place to give Miami party-goers an incredible experience.

The artists are just as fabulous to speak with as they are to listen to. Even with hundreds of partiers pressing against their stage and screaming and flashing texts in their faces; the artists, never lose their smile and just keep the show going. Kudos to you talented ones!

Festival Season Initiated

This summer’s festival season is filled with acts from all across the world to various outdoor locations to feed our endless lust for loud noises, close contact with total strangers and need for the next adventure. Undrgrnd Sound plans on hitting up Upstate New York (not real Upstate, but “upstate” for you city kids) for this year’s Camp Bisco.

Each week Camp Bisco has an artist spotlight so that the fans and those traveling to the festival really have an idea of who each artist is. Some people are already die hard fans for previewed artist but some you might not really know to much about, so lets take a look at this weeks focus.

Passion Pit

It’s been 4 years since Michal Angelakos, and his fellow bandmates Ian Hultquist, Ayad Al Adhamy, Thom Plasses and Adam Lavinsky recored their first full length album, Manners. Their most recent album, released in July 2012 is something that alternative rock junkies can get their fix with covers that such as ‘Dreams’ originally by The Cranberries and ‘Tonight Tonight’ which you may remember from The Smashing Pumpkins.

Your typical Saturday night at Webster Hall’s main ball room would be accompanied by a great line up of DJ’s along with pyro acts, and Lyra acts keeping to the theme of the Circus Saturdays, a weekly event that Webster Hall has been famous for. But with the retirement of Circus Saturdays, Webster Hall is proud to announce its brand new theme of Saturday night parties called ‘Brite Nights’. This upcoming Saturday April 13th will be the premiere of this new weekly event and starting it off will be 21 year old DJ & producer DallasK from Wolfgang Gartner’s record label “Kindergarten Recordings” along with Popeska and Charlie Darker.

DallasK

Dallas Koehlke aka DallasK started producing dance music when he was only 15 years old. Now 21 he is quickly becoming one of the most talked about young producer/DJ’s of today. His energetic and glitchy electro house is featured on virtually every major blog and consistently charts on both the hype machine popular and twitter charts. Hailing from Orlando he constantly excites crowds all around the country with his live sets that draw influence from all genres of dance music. DallasK has shared the stage with artists such as Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner and Nero. Currently he is producing/remixing for other artists as well as having several scheduled solo releases.

Popeska

Popeska started off as a dorm-room producer at Georgia Tech, uploading tracks to Soundcloud as a hobby, to being the first signing to Wolfgang Gartner’s Kindergarten Records. Ralf Popescu aka Popeska never imagined that electronic music would be his career. Quickly attracting listeners on a daily basis, Popeska’s steady output of progressive and sonically addicting material has set the stage for the release of his debut EP, entitled Karmameter, along with well-regarded remixes for Bloody Beetroots & Street Lurkin, as well as his earned inclusion on 2012’s “Love & War” tour featuring Wolfgang Gartner and Pierce Fulton.

Charlie Darker

Charlie Darker, the musical alias of 19-year old DJ/producer Evan Blair, is a product of the explosion of the EDM movement in North America. Charlie Darker spent his early years playing different instruments in numerous bands, but eventually traded in the guitar and drums for a Macbook and Ableton. Since his venture from indie rock to EDM in 2009. While gaining exposure as a notable producer in the blogosphere, Darker then took his talents from the studio to the club, conquering EDM venues across Canada. This reputation has allowed him to share the stage with well-respected DJs such as Wolfgang Gartner, LA Riots, Mord Fustang, and Peace Treaty. After releasing his first official single “Astromarx” on Plasmapool’s Houserecordings, Charlie Darker was handpicked by Mord Fustang to remix the electro all-star’s Beatport chart-topper ”Electric Dream”. The track then went on to crack the top 5 on the Beatport dubstep chart, as well as the top 100 beatport overall chart.
